IRAQI OFFICIALS NOT SURE HOW TO EXECUTE CHEMICAL ALI SO MANY TIMES

January 18 2010

Baghdad, Iraq – Of all the horrors that occurred in Iraq under the rule of Saddam Hussein there is perhaps no incident as reprehensible and notorious as the Halabja poison gas attack. That event, the culmination of a series of offensives against the halabja attacks
Kurdish minority, resulted in the deaths of up to 5000 civilians immediately and thousands more who had been injured and poisoned by the toxin. That event stands as the largest chemical attack against a civilian population in history and undoubtedly one of the greatest tragedies of the many that occurred under Hussein.

With Hussein now gone it is the true architects of that campaign who are paying for the tragedy. Chief among them is Ali Hassan Abd al-Majid al-Tikritieh, a cousin of Hussein who is better known as ‘Chemical Ali’. It was Ali who while serving as proconsul of the northern territory of Iraq who ordered the dispersion of chemicals such as Mustard Gas, Sarin, and VX against the Kurdish town of Halabja. Now over twenty years after those events Ali has once again been convicted of ordering those actions and sentenced to death, for the fourth time. It is those multiple death sentences that has drawn controversy in the country with no one quite able to figure out how to kill Ali so many times.chemical ali

“We are very happy that once again the courts have shown that these kinds of actions are unacceptable at any time. The conviction of Chemical Ali is vindication for the thousands of his victims as well as the survivors and their families. When he is eventually executed, the lives of those who he killed will finally be redeemed,” said Iraqi Vice-President Tariq al-Hashemi. “One day this justice will come but for now we must be content in the fact that he has been convicted in the courts, in the eyes and hearts of the public, and in the judgement of God. This death sentence is further proof that all Iraqis value the preciousness of life.”

The lack of execution thus far has often been linked to a political dispute over a fellow convict and former Defence Minister Sultan Hashim al-Taie. Now though the piling on of death sentences has further complicated the issue with no one quite sure how to kill a human being four times.halabja masss grave

“It’s really a major issue for many in the country. In most situations like this the convict would simply be executed once and it would be accepted that that action accounts for all the convictions but in Iraq such a thing isn’t quite so simple. There needs to be clarity here and a decisive resolution to these issues but that is very difficult with all these convictions,” said Iraqi law expert Sabri Ghani Ameer. “That is delaying the carrying out of this sentence even longer because no one is quite sure how to deal with it. We know of course that a person can only die once, but we are stuck with the need to kill him four times and so things are at a standstill.”

Some have postulated killing Ali and then resurrecting him with some kind of advanced scientific procedure that hasn’t yet been invented, though that is seen as highly unlikely.return of the living dead tarman

“Aside from the religious concerns the nation of Iraq simply does not possess the scientific knowledge to resurrect the dead. We also do not have on the books anything that would lawfully define such a case and how it should be dealt with,” continued Ameer. “Questions like whether or not the resurrected person is truly the same person or not would have to be asked and answered in law. Given the state of politics in the country today I think it would be very difficult to reach a conclusion on that and so we are still stuck. One day, perhaps, it will be solved but I am not optimistic.”

It’s believed that at some point Chemical Ali will eventually die from something.
