ISRAELI POLICE MAKING EFFORT TO ARREST CHILDREN PROPERLY
March 12 2010
Jerusalem, Israel – There are few conflicts in the world that have the same kind of ferocity and global consequences as the one between Israel and the Palestinians. Though other ethnic and social traumas exist in many places across the globe, the
historical significance and the financial importance of that region of the world has ensured that every move, no matter how insignificant, is scrutinized by every other nation. That hasn’t stopped the conflict however and the battles between the two distinct but intertwined communities will likely continue for years to come.
Because of that attention the kind of atrocities that occur in countries like Sudan, Nigeria or Burma rarely happens between the two sides, but their position as the star of international conflict means that virtually every action makes the news. Most recently Israeli police have come under fire for improperly arresting young children, mostly boys, and holding them for extended periods subjecting them violence. While such incidents appear to be isolated, the violent arrests of children rarely go over well in the west and that has prompted major changes for police officials who now plan to implement harsh standards when arresting Palestinian children.
“We have heard the criticism and we acknowledge that in some rare instances abuses

have occurred. Such acts are not official policy and will not be such anytime in the future. Occasionally, when dealing with the type of conflict that we are faced with on a regular basis, people can take liberties. I can assure you that such incidents are not going ignored and will be dealt with,” said Police spokesperson Mickey Rosenfield. “However, we will continue to operate despite the age of the suspects, once we have information on crimes. We cannot allow considerations such as age or perceived innocence to effect the way in which we deal with the very serious threats facing our country. We will implement new procedures to deal with the way in which young children are dealt with so that we can continue to arrest them.”
Officially, Israeli police have no restrictions whatsoever on who they arrest.
“This is quite a significant step for the Israeli government and could bode well for the future for peace in the region. Like many countries in the region, Israeli has had no standards whatsoever when it comes to arrests or convictions. Basically if someone believed you guilty you were and there was nothing you could do about it,” said Scrape TV Middle East analyst David Gershwin. “That will likely still apply to adults but the fact that they may now, at least officially, be willing to implement some kind of procedures for children means that things truly are changing in the country, and hopefully the region. Whether the rest of the countries like to admit it to not, they have often followed the lead of Israel.”
Both Syria and Saudi Arabia have executed children as young as four in recent months.
“This is a long and very deeply felt issue that won’t simply be solved by a change in on small policy but what it could do is represent a changing attitude by the policy makers. True, they are still razing Palestinian homes and establishing new settlements, and true Palestinian groups are still amassing weapons, but things can always change and it appears they have, in some small way at least,” continued Gershwin. “So at least the children of Palestine will be safe, at least until they turn a certain age when the gloves will really come off.”
Palestinians officials stated that they have implemented similar policies, but have made no arrests since they were established in 1920.
