MEIN KAMPF TO BE REPUBLISHED IN GERMANY; MOVIE IN THE WORKS
February 6 2010
Munich, Germany – Like people, nations frequently have incidents in their past they would rather forget. Notorious incidents like the expulsion of the Israelites, the Spanish inquisition, and the Armenian Genocide are just a few examples of scars that

great nations have endured. There is however little debating that one incident stands above all as the greatest shame that a nation has ever endured. That incident of course was the rise of National Socialism and the almost unimaginable horrors Europe suffered under their reign.
Unlike many other countries though, Germany has not whitewashed their past or downplayed their role in those events but rather embraced those years as some of the most important in their long and storied history. With a Holocaust memorial and historical artifacts across the country, Germans have faced their past head on and in doing so have mitigated the horrors that occurred. Now one of the most prosperous nations in the world and respected by virtually every other nation Germany has left its past where it belongs, in the past. Still not content though, the people of the country are now facing head on the greatest example of those horrible days with the pending republication of Hitler’s manifesto, ‘Mein Kampf’. With copyright restrictions set to expire, the book that outlined the ideology of Nazism will finally see publication in its homeland with television, movie, and even video game tie-ins already in development.
“Once Bavaria's copyright expires, there is the danger of charlatans and neo-Nazis appropriating this infamous book for themselves. When the copyright licence expires in 2015 we plan to finally republish the book, though it will not be in its original form.,” Wolfgang Heubischsaid of the Munich-based Institute of Contemporary History. “We think our version, with sensible notes and comments pointing out the falsity of much of what he wrote, will be far better than neo-Nazis putting out their own versions. This will prevent neo-Nazi from profiteering from Mein Kampf. while an aggressive and enlightening engagement with the book would doubtless remove many of its false, persisting myths.”
Concerns about the integrity of the authors intent aside, the publication is notable because of a constitutional ban that punishes the dissemination of Nazi ideology with fines and imprisonment.
“It’s certainly yet another step forward in dealing with the horrors that the people of Europe and the good people of Germany in particular continue to suffer. It’s incomplete for many reasons, notably the editing of the text, but it is a move that few other nations would have the gall to make,” said Scrape TV Literary analyst Samuel Lee. “Obviously the demand for this has been growing for many years and when it is finally released it will be huge. If they are able to sort of cross promote the release with other forms of media like movies and video games they could be looking at the greatest entertainment launch in German history. Say what you want about the tenets of National Socialism, at least people will be reading.”
Outside the global success of the Harry Potter books, book sales have slumped across the globe with the growing popularity of the web and other forms of entertainment media.
“Because of the history behind this work and the rabid public interest that has been growing in Germany for so many years I think this could really be massive. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Hitler on backpacks and lunch boxes across the nation shortly after the release,” continued Lee. “That is the way launches happen now. If the people behind this they will also exploit other Third Reich personalities like Himmler and Bormann. Who knows, in a few years children across Germany could be wearing Joseph Goebbels outfits for Halloween. “
Both Constantin Film and Bavaria Film studios, two of Germany’s largest, are reportedly pursuing ‘Mein Kampf’ films.
