160 DEAD AS OVERLOADED INDIAN PLANE GOES OFF RUNWAY
May 22 2010
New Delhi, India – In ancient times travel from place to place was an arduous effort, to say the least. Distantly travel took generations as mankind moved from a small corner of Africa to Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Eventually we began to tame
animals and create machines that would allow easier transport from place to place, though for the most part only the wealthy and imperials were able to afford such luxuries, and even then it could take decades to travel vast distances.
In the last hundred years or so that has changed dramatically. The development of motor vehicles and airplanes have allowed for super fast travel over great distances and made it accessible to people regardless of their station in life. Now a person can circumnavigate the globe in the same amount of time it would have taken our ancestors to travel to a neighbouring city. Of course that mass movement of people has also led to major congestion both in the air and on the land with infrastructure oftentimes not supporting the needs of the public as effectively as would be ideal. Such is very much the case India which has a persistently migratory nation of over a billion people and not nearly enough space for them to move, often resulting in train derailments, bus accidents, and today a deadly plane crash that has killed at least 160 people.
“Our worst fears have come true. This is a major calamity. It is feared that most of the people have died. There are a few survivors. We have confirmed that. But we don't have the number,” said government officials. “We request cooperation from local officials at this hour of crisis. We urge citizens of the area to please stay away from the crash site so that emergency personnel will be able to do their work and secure the location and try to locate any survivors. We will be updating the public and family members with new information when it becomes available.”
The crash in Mangalore has been expected for many years with many citing issues with the runway and overcrowded flights.
“Unfortunately these types of accidents are all too common in India and frankly they
are likely to increase in the coming years. The country is expanding rapidly and will
have the largest population in the world in just a few years yet little has been done to improve the infrastructure and as things become more and more crowded implementing reforms will become more and more difficult,” said Scrape TV Infrastructure analyst Abigail Wassmer. “Of course there are things the government can do. Unfortunately these overloaded buses and cars are difficult to stop but trains and planes are a different thing. Planes in particular should not have people riding outside the cabin areas and they should only be allowing people that they have enough seats for, and that doesn’t include pulling out proper airplane seats and bringing in stools and other forms. The government can at least enforce that.”
Improving runway conditions has long been an issue for the government due to sheer amount of traffic coming in and out.
“Look, these pilots are very talented. They are able, usually at least, to land on very crowded runways and do it with huge loads but they are still engaging in risky behaviour which is going to result in the occasional tragedy. Luckily they do have a lot of people so the country itself won’t be hurt,” continued Wassmer. “Still people are going to get upset if they keep dying like this and things are just going to get worse going forward. Hopefully they will at least keep people from riding on the wings, those things are essentially to keeping the plane in the air.”
Another plane in nearby Bangalore nearly crashed two days ago, sending its 1400 passengers into shock.
