ISRAEL FREAK FRUITS FORGE A NEW PATH TO MIDDLE EAST PEACE
June 15 2010
Purim, Israel – The debate and battle over the Middle East has of course been front and centre of late but the recent conflicts between the Israelis and the Palestinians is merely the most recent battle for the region. This area after all is the home of human
civilization. It contains the fertile crescent where we first started to farm crops, it is the cradle of civilization where cities were first established, and it is the centre of three of the world’s largest and most influential religions. There is no area in the world that has seen more bloodshed than the Middle East so the current conflict is just more of the same.
That knowledge doesn’t make things any easier for the people involved in the conflict. Like their ancestors, it is their blood that is being shed on the desert sands and so their experience cannot be subjective or reasoned, they are living the trauma every day. Now a new front in the current conflict has started to inflict new horrors on the people of the region, this on in the form of lemon-scented tomatoes. At issue is a new initiative by Israeli farmers to start producing more exotic products which is requiring the annexation of new lands, a controversial issue throughout the region and one that could once again upset the delicate balance in the region.
“Its fun, it's interesting and it brings in the customers. I have developed a national following for these strange-looking crops, which include elongated strawberries and round carrots. People complain that tomatoes don't taste like they used to. That's the driving force behind this project: attempting to restore the flavor of the past, plus you can charge the customers more,” said Tel Aviv farmer said Uri Rabinowitz. “Obviously it means that we need more land. Not everyone can afford this exotic food and so the farming must be in addition to food that we are already producing and cannot take the land already being used. That means expanding the territory of course.”
Much of the violence in the region has been a direct result of the razing of Palestinian homes in favour if Israeli settlements. Thus far though no violence has erupted over the new farms.
“Land is the most tense issue in this region and is likely to remain so for a long time to come. With millions of people arguing over a very small parcel of territory any shift in borders is bound to cause problems. Essentially land has always been the problem in the Middle East, far more powerful than religion or ethnic conflicts,” said Scrape TV Middle East analyst David Gershwin. “However that doesn’t seem to be the case here. All of this new land has been consumed yet there are no protests. Perhaps carrot-shaped strawberries and pre-buttered potatoes break through thousands of years of c onflict. Perhaps weird food is the only thing that has been missing in the Middle East puzzle.”
Thus far, for obvious reasons, no bacon related products have been created even for export.
“Many a conflict has been solved by the breaking of bread and perhaps this one is no

different. Many people have argued that if both sides were to just sit down and just discuss their issues like grownups then much of problems could be and would be solved. Now they have an excuse; freak fruits,” continued Gerhswin. “Of course these foods go for incredibly high prices and will be out of reach for most ordinary people on both sides of the conflict and those are the people who will be losing their land. So far though no problems. If they had only known 5000 years ago that all of this could have been solved with mini-watermelons the world would have been a much different place.”
Other foods being developed are giant raisins and yellow cherry tomatoes, the latter being farmed to help bolster the peace process on Afghanistan.
