MANUEL NORIEGA FINALLY GETS ANOTHER NIGHT IN PARIS
April 28 2010
Paris, France – The city of lights has drawn many a visitor to her fair shores. Whether young couples in love, old couples renewing their affections, artists seeking inspiration from the greats, or just regular visitors wanting to see all the beauty and
history the city has to offer. For decades Paris has held a fascination for all those types of people, drawing millions of visitors every year to bath in the almost otherworldly beauty the city has to offer.
Manuel Noriega has never been one of those people. The former military dictator hasn’t been to Paris in many years, decades even, but the last time he was there he lived in t he lap of luxury, dining at the finest restaurants and staying in one of personal apartments, quite a world away from his most recent digs at the Federal Correctional Institution in Miami where he has been a guest for the last eighteen years. Now however Noriega is headed back to the city he once loved after finally checking out of his Miami residence. Paris hadn’t been his intended destination however, he had wanted to return to his homeland in Panama, but French law enforcement officials decided to pursue a warrant on Noriega, sending him back to France. Though not his desired place to visit Noriega has apparently decided to make the most of the unexpected detour and live the high life in the city of lights.
“As a prisoner of war, I have the right to everything the Geneva Convention envisages such as repatriation at the end of captivity. This is my sovereign right and I insist on having only the rights due to me and every other citizen,” said Noriega before boarding the flight. “However if I am forced to spend some time in Paris I will do so. I have been to the city many times and have many good friends and good memoires there. I will do as I have always done and make the best of things.”
Noriega, who has been ailing for the last few years, is facing charges of money laundering in France.
“Noriega is more than a controversial figure. For an entire generation he is an arch
criminal, a serious bad guy who has gotten what he deserves. While that is partially true, and there is little doubt that he wreaked havoc on the people of Panama and helped to facilitate the rise of drug culture in the United States, he wasn’t an Adolf Hitler type. He was really just a criminal running a country,” said Scrape TV Crime analyst Willard Weston. “That is corrupt to be sure but it is not evil, not in the scope of what other dictators have done. He most certainly deserved the time he spent in prison and we will have to see what the evidence shows in France, but it’s very well possible that he deserves what he gets there. At least there he will be doing it in style.”
It’s not clear if Noriega, if convicted, will actually spend time in the city or just on the outskirts.
“Because he has the status a prisoner of war he is held to a different standard, even
in prison. He had two rooms in Miami, a TV, an exercise bike and all sorts of other amenities that regular prisoners simply don’t have. In Paris I would imagine things would be even better,” continued Weston. “Paris has the reputation for being a little snooty and that may be the case but with Noriega it will be different. He is a VIP and the people of that city know how to treat high rollers. I’m sure he’ll enjoy his time there no matter how long it might be.”
Noriega has apparently confessed to money laundering in Barbados as well but no evidence has been found as yet.
