RAPE IN CAMBODIA FINALLY ON THE RISE

April 17 2010

Phnom Penh, Cambodia – There are some nations in the world that seem to be possessed of incredible luck and fortune, nations which have for centuries remained vital, influential, and wealthy despite social and political upheaval. There are also angkor wat
nations that despite long and storied histories remain on the periphery of society, nations which seem to have never had a shot and what little opportunities they do have are ultimately evaporated in the wake of more successful nations or just the ever moving tide of history.

The latter has been the case with Cambodia which for centuries stood as a regional power in southern Asia. Never quite at the level of great empires such as Rome or Mongolia, the Khmer empire was nonetheless a major player throughout the region which helped to shape the political structure of the region. Eventually that empire began to decline and eventually would fall apart completely, destroying everything the nation had accomplished and plunging it into centuries of darkness. War, colonial rule, and genocide have all taken that once great nation down to an also-ran, a nation that may never again stand on its own but now new data suggest that there is one area where Cambodia may finally find success, rape.cambodia woman condom

“Dozens of survivors told us that they face extortion, ignorance and disbelief from officials whose job it should be to assist them and protect their rights. For too many survivors of rape, the pursuit of justice and medical support adds further distress to the initial abuse. Incidents of rape have increased by double digits since 2008 and appear to only be getting worse,” wrote Amnesty International in a report. “With the lack of social support towards victims, it is crucial that the government breaks the silence and publicly condemns sexual violence, to show that it will not tolerate such serious crimes and to acknowledge the pain of the survivors.”

Cambodia still ranks far down on the list of most rapes, a crown which belongs to South Africa which boasts nearly twice as many incidents as number two on the list.cambodian girl

“Traditionally western countries have had the highest rape levels throughout the world, with South Africa being the exception, though it is heavily influenced by western nations. Australia, Canada, The United States are all nations that have been traditional rape hotspots but the third world has been coming on strong of late, particularly when you factor in eastern European nations which have always been very rape happy,” said Scrape TV Health analyst Rebecca Phelps. “While the numbers are still well below what we see in western nations, and nothing compared to South Africa, it shows that the rest of the world is willing to do what it takes to catch up. With numbers like 78 per cent increases in child rapes over a year you can certainly see that they are making a concerted effort to equal the playing field with the rest of the world. Maybe someday there will even be a World Cup in Cambodia.”

South Africa hosts the World Cup this June where rapes are expected to jump dramatically.cambodia slum

“There is no doubt that part of this increase is due in part to increased reporting which Cambodia has made a concerted effort to improve over the last few years, but a great deal of the surge is due to the simple fact that more people are being raped across all spectrums of Cambodian society,” continued Phelps. “There is no way to determine at this juncture if this is a part of a wider trend for the entire region or whether or not it will start to extend outwards to nations such as Laos and Vietnam. If it does however we could be witnessing a beginning of the return of the Khmer, though hopefully not like the last one.”

The Khmer Rouge killed 2 million people, a third of the population of the country, which many experts believe helped to inhibit rape numbers in the nation.
