SOUTH KOREA VOWS HARSH LANGUAGE OVER WARSHIP SINKING
May 3 2010
Seoul, South Korea – The 20th century saw more conflict than in the rest of history combined. Two World Wars, major conflicts in Africa and Asia, and hundreds of smaller conflicts and brutal subjugation of populations made that hundred years the
bloodiest in our short history. While certain traumas – the Armenian genocide, the Holocaust – gain a great deal of press for the trauma they inflicted on their populations, there is one other clash that has been perpetuating the misery of a people longer than any other, the battle between the Koreas.
Split down the centre, the division between the formerly unified nations has also split the identity of a people and perhaps most tragically the bonds between family members. Now almost sixty years long, the division between the two halves of the country is unlikely to be resolved anytime in the near future, particularly as the North continues to antagonize the rest of the world. Of course, the real conflict is not between the totalitarian regime in the north and the rest of the world, it is between the siblings, a family fight that has exported its trauma to the rest of the world. Now the latest kerfuffle between the twin nations has reached a boiling point following the sinking of a South Korean warship with promises of retaliation in the form of extremely harsh language.
“I believe that, by thoroughly and completely getting to the bottom of the incident to the maximum extent possible, we should deal some kind of blow against those forces which made our officers and men sacrifice their lives for their country,” said South Korean Defence Minister Kim Tae-Young. “I promise swift and punitive action against the perpetrators who killed our soldiers. This type of aggression will not stand, will not be allowed, and will have the type of response that will ensure the perpetrators will never again harm our sailors or make moves against us.”
The sinking of the Cheonan killed 46 sailors. Many in the south believe that a torpedo from a North Korean vessel broke the vessel in two.
“Thus far this isn’t much evidence one way or the other but obviously something went wrong. Ships generally do not spontaneously break in two, even Korean made ones.

The country has a long way to go before their engineering and manufacturing is at the level of say Japan, but the ship should still not have just broken apart which suggest foul play,” said Scrape TV International Conflict analyst Mario Martinez. “Most likely it was a torpedo and the only nation in the region capable and willing to do that is the North making them the most likely suspect. Of course where that goes from here is a totally different question. Military action is out of the question and sanctions won’t do anything so they are left with what they have always been left with, very harsh language.”
North Korea has one of the world’s largest militaries and the South has the United States military. It’s believed unlikely that the harsh languages will employ profanities.
“Normally a situation like this would prompt war but that has been the state of affairs between those two countries since the fifties. As much as they tempt each other, tease a fight, it always ends up with talk which is likely what will happen here, though I imagine that the South will want to up the ante quite a bit this time,” continued Martinez. “In Korean there is a great emphasis on how words are phrased. Thy denote levels of respect for elders, of familiarity amongst peers. I’d imagine that that will come very much into play in this conflict. They do need to be careful though, the North may not be as eloquent but they do have nukes.”
North Korean officials, as usual, had nothing to say.
