“VOTING” UNDERWAY IN ETHIOPIA

May 23 2010

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Human beings have always sought socialization. It is in fact one of our basic design principle. Cooperation between different peoples of varying tribes allowed early humans to fight dangerous predators, develop rudimentary tools, vote
and eventually evolve language and complex brains. In the millennia since those early days on the African Savannah, our societies have certainly changed dramatically but the core principles and reasons for such organization have remained the same.  The cooperation between peoples have continued to drive human evolution, pushing us ever forward to the future.

At the heart of many modern societies is a system that has been called the most revolutionary concept human beings have ever created; Democracy. The ultimate example of the masses showing their power over the ruling class, democracy has, despite serious challenges and flaws, become the most dominant political force yet created. With the majority of wealthy and successful countries employing some version of democratic rule the process has spread to smaller nations, replacing antiquated systems such as Monarchism and Aristocratism. Still some nations struggle with the concept of rule by the masses with many unwilling or unable to let go of the systems that have carried them for so many years. Such is the case for Ethiopia, that land where human beings first began to organize societies, where so-called “voting” has begun in the latest parliamentary election.Meles Zenawi

“This has been one of the best examples of democracy in our country. There is a very high turnout, that is peaceful and calm, and people are very motivated to participate and vote. We are looking at a 90 percent voter turnout which would is remarkable for any country,” said chief EU election observer Thijs Berman. “Normally we see chaos in the election lines and signs of riot and protest but everything appears to be calm here today. This is a very good sign for the country and the people of Ethiopia and could mark a new era in politics in the country.”

It is expected that the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front, headed by Meles Zenawi will retain power after consolidating support through widespread imprisonments and payoffs.

“Africa is really at the forefront of the evolution of human culture for a variety of reasons. European, American, and Asian nations have been employing democracy for ethiopia violence
decades and have thus become sort of mired in the way they have done things. They stick with the comfortable and the accepted way of doing things and don’t look to new ideas that could changes things,” said Scrape TV Political analyst Gabriel Kinsey. “In Africa nations simply aren’t bound by such conventions or expectations. They can revolutionize the way in which democracy works and change it for the future. That continent is where the future of democracy lies and it makes sense, perfect historical sense, that Ethiopia would lead the way. With opposition like Medrek, which is composed of eight different parties, barely getting a voice the rulers of the country have shown that things can and will change.”famine ethiopia

In a parliamentary system, such as the ones employed in the United Kingdom and Canada, different parties can join forces to form ruling majorities, though such coalitions are generally composed if no more than two or three entities.

“There are no other countries that would even consider having more than a half dozen parties as part of a coalition. Normally such fracturing would indicate that there is a major gap in the will of the people but in Ethiopia they just brush all that aside and make things work. That is future of democracy,” continued Kinsey. “Bringing all of these disparate identities and political ideologies together into one unified political system is something other nations wouldn’t even dream of doing, and having the will to do that even in the face of things like protests and criticism and a starving population shows really remarkable fortitude. Once again, Ethiopia is at the bleeding edge of human development.”

Officials have reported that they aren’t going to even bother counting the votes this time around.
