WHALING PEACE PLAN EXPECTED TO GO AHEAD THIS YEAR
April 19 2010
Washington. D.C. – ‘All men live enveloped in whale-lines. All are born with halters round their necks; but it is only when caught in the swift, sudden turn of death, that mortals realize the silent, subtle, ever present perils of life’. When Herman Melville
wrote those words almost 150 years ago he was not expressing the centuries long conflict between man and whale but also the eternal struggle that war wages on the hearts of men.
Moby Dick was of course never really about whaling. Though the Pequod was indeed a whaler and the men on her seasoned veterans of the ocean, the tale was one of revenge and the toll that that can take on the souls of men. In the modern world Ahab’s obsessive quest to destroy the whale can be seen as a parable for the ongoing conflict with the whale world. In Melville’s time whales were an abstract, a literary device, but in the our time whales have become a different beast altogether. With nations such as Japan, Iceland, and Norway continuing to wage war on the great beasts of the sea and a growing desire to forge peace, the war between man and whale has become more ferocious and deadly than anything Ahab could have imagined. Now a new initiative seeks to finally end the conflict between man and whale with a new peace initiative that could finally bring both sides to the negotiating table.
“Saving whales is absolutely what we are about. But now we have a problem of increasing whaling, a black market and no controls. The US government couldn't be more opposed to lethal scientific whaling and commercial whaling,” said Monica Medina of the U.S. division of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), whose peers show a markedly different attitude.
“We have been showing good faith, but by presenting a moving target they are showing a lack of will to negotiate. You cannot negotiate with a moving target,” said Tomas Heidar, commissioner for the Icelandic division of the IWC.
However experts believe that such opposition is merely a part of the internal negotiations between the human representatives.
“Inherently there will always be people jockeying for position, trying to get exactly
what they want from any potential deal and that isn’t always waged between the two main belligerents. I can assure you that this kind of negotiation would be going on amongst the whales if they had the ability to perform higher level comprehension like humans,” said Scrape TV Zoology analyst Cambridge Walker. “Whales are quite intelligent but they are not at the same level as human beings. Their reasoning and comprehension abilities are significantly less than us and they have limited ability to cooperate in groups, at least when it comes to complicated negotiations such as peace deals. Luckily for the whales there are humans willing to fight for them, and that will go a long way to securing peace between the two species.”
Whales also do not possess hands making it very difficult for them to sign any potential peace agreement.
“Whales have been suffering major losses over the last century and there’s a great likelihood that they realize that the battle is lost for them. They could continue to fight but that will likely only end in further damage to their species and long term survival,” continued Walker. “For humans it is much like the Ahab syndrome. We could continue to push forward and fully eradicate whales from the planet but in doing so we will have lost something in ourselves. Our compassion, our ability to reject our nature, that is what makes us human and separates us from other species. If we don’t negotiate a peace then we will be no better than the whales which we seek to destroy.”
We could not reach whale representatives for comment.
