COLOMBIAN POLICE TAKE DOWN INFAMOUS LORENZO THE PARROT
September 23 2010
Bogota, Colombia – For decades one country above all others has been associated with the drug trade. Colombia was not the origin of cocaine, nor was it the innovator of the mass sale of the drug, but through the 1970’s and 80’s the country became
synonymous with selling the drug as it became the primary importer to the United States just as law enforcement and government officials were most aggressively fighting the influx of illegal drugs.
Just as Germany may always be associated with Nazism, or South Africa with apartheid, Colombia may forever be connected to the drug trade, specifically the violent organized crime that so dominated the scene for years. While it is true that the Colombian drug trade is still alive and vital, it is hardly the dominate force it once was decades ago. The drug scene has altered in those years with new designer drugs taking the bulk of the top line revenue away from the people who so helped to create the market. That has resulted in a kind of uneasy peace between organized drug gangs and police with not much money or incentive to continue to aggressive battle that has gone on for decades. However police, in an effort to show the public that they are still working in their best interests, have begun cracking down on affiliates of the gangs, most notably the informant parrots that have acted as look outs for so many years.
“We feel that this case, with this parrot, is major breakthrough in the drug war and will forever change the way these gangs engage in their criminal dealings. Lorenzo the Parrot has been a menace for a very long time and we are extremely excited to have caught him,” said a police spokesperson. “He was well known throughout the country for his warning phrase of ‘Run, run, the cat is going to get you!’ whenever police arrived but he will not be doing any of that anymore. Now Lorenzo will spend his life behind bars. He's been handed over to special animal officials to join other birds suspected to be guilty of similar crimes.”
Most of the other animals caught in the country wide sting are birds, but a few dogs and even one monkey have also been captured, though none as big as Lorenzo.
“Lorenzo has been a spook, a demon in Colombia for many years. He has become notorious for his exploits and has become a symbol for many in the business which makes him a huge win for police. A lot of manpower has been dedicated towards this capture but it will pay great dividends,” said Colombian drug expert Hector Bagorro. “He is the face and voice of this type of animal informant and his capture shows these beasts that no one is safe, that no one is immune to prosecution. This is about as big an arrest as has ever been made in this country.”
The gang that Lorenzo had been working with were also nabbed in the raid.
“Lorenzo is a huge catch but unfortunately his arrest does mean the end of the drug business in our country. Things will continue and possibly, without the symbolic presence of Lorenzo to drive the public interest, get worse before it gets better,” continued Bagorro. “There is also the possibility that a gang will try to free Lorenzo. He is quite well liked throughout the industry and would act as a very significant source of pride for any gang using him as their spokesperson, particularly now. Hopefully this arrest will not escalate an already difficult situation.”
Lorenzo was apparently not speaking with police.
