DUTCH TEEN TO BECOME NEXT PERSON TO FAIL IN AROUND THE WORLD SEA VOYAGE

July 18 2010

The Hague, Netherlands – The high seas have always been a source of intrigue and adventure and commerce for human beings. Some of our earliest tales have been about the sea, both our attempts to conquer it and its success in conquering us. seafaring ship
Perhaps our fascination with the water stems from our ancient history, a kind of genetic memory. Perhaps it is because water surrounds us yet it is something so difficult to grasp. Perhaps it is simply because we are fascinated with the unknown, something the Earth’s oceans certainly represent.

Whatever the reasons behind our connection to the sea, the connection exists and has cast a long shadow over much of human history. The conquest of the Atlantic Ocean, as an example, led to the rise of the United States and their massive influence on global culture. However not all tales of the sea are so grand. The oceans are big, massive even, but the laura dekker
dreams of those who engage them are intimate and personal. Whether it is the fictional tale of revenge by Captain Ahab or simply seeking a new life in a new world, our fascination with the sea is our own. That dream is something Dutch teen Laura Dekker is following, a dream that fellow teen Abby Sunderland followed earlier this year, a dream that ended in failure as it seems will happen again.

“I know she can do it, she's a strong girl who does not give up easily. Of course no mother on earth likes it if her daughter goes to sea alone. I will have sleepless nights from the worry, but this is about Laura and how I can help her,” said Dekker’s mother, Babs Mueller, of her daughter’s dream of sailing around the world. “Laura isn't a criminal, she just wants to sail.”

Mueller earlier opposed her daughter’s dream of the voyage but has since changed her mind. Dekker, a ward of the state, is due in court on Tuesday to determine whether or not she will be allowed to attempt the global voyage.

“Many people have attempted to travel around the world, I mean there was even a abby sunderland
famous novel about that, and almost no one has succeeded in the traditional sense. True, people have flown from country to country and in a way that makes them world travellers, but an organized concentrated trip totally circumnavigating the globe is the stuff of fiction for the most part,” said Scrape TV High Seas analyst Ricardo Fuentes. “There are many challenges that would face anyone seeking to travel around the world. Piracy, war, and all kinds of natural elements have thwarted robust efforts to make the trip and perhaps render it impossible. To think that a single teen girl would be able to accomplish what so many have failed to achieve is just strange, but they keep trying.”

Abby Sunderland, an American teen, failed last month in her attempt after heavy seas and high winds dismasted her vessel.around the world in 80 days

“Most teen girls are sitting around on Facebook and texting but these girls are out there doing things, granted they are mostly crazy things, but they are doing them. That has to be respected and these girls deserve a pat on the back,” continued Fuentes. “I’d imagine that this other girl will fail in much the same way as Sunderland but at least she tried, I suppose. I mean trying and failing is better than not having tried at all, though trying and succeeding is better than both of those options. I’d imagine we won’t be seeing that, she is just a little girl after all.”

Though the Dutch have a long naval history it’s seen as unlikely that that will affect Dekker’s attempt at all.
