GERMAN COURT LEGALIZES EUTHANASIA, AGAIN
July 11 2010
Berlin, Germany – Of all the incredible things that humankind has been able to accomplish in our short time on the planet our ability to reject our nature is perhaps the most remarkable. Unlike every other species of life on the planet that has ever
lived human beings are able to reject our natural instincts and make choices. Rejecting sex or going on a diet may seem like something unremarkable but doing that is totally unique to human beings and each time we make such a choice we are expressing what it means to be human.
There is no better example of that ability to make a choice than suicide. All of the actions of living creatures, including eating and having sex, are centered on the principle of perpetuating the species and sustaining life. Because of that the idea, of someone choosing to end their life is in direct conflict with our essential nature and is perhaps the ultimate example of humanity’s unique nature. Still, suicide is not something normally embraced by the majority of people and in recent years has become a potent political and social issue, particularly when it comes to the terminally ill. However, in recent years major cases have challenged the notion of sustained life and now a major country, Germany, has authorized euthanasia for the second time, though this time such action requires prior permission.
“The Federal Court of Justice has acquitted a lawyer that had advised a client to authorize the removal of a feeding tube from her terminally ill mother. The patient had previously notified that she did not wish to be kept alive by artificial means and the court has upheld that wish,” said a government spokesperson. “WE will of course be inspecting and investigating this case to judge what kind of long term impact it will have on the medical care system in our country which of course has always been one of the leading innovators in the world. We will have no more comment at this time.”
Germany was the first country to institute universal healthcare under President Hindenburg.
“This debate over euthanasia has been a major issue in many countries, many sophisticated countries, for decades but in recent years has become something more than just a medical concern and become a social and political

football. While many people have noted the religious concerns over such actions, it is bigger than that. The idea of suicide is simply repugnant to the vast majority of people and that informs their actions,” said Scrape TV Medical analyst Dr. Phillip Waites. “Luckily that attitude seems to be changing and it is starting to become simply a medical issue which is as it always should have been. There have been major cases throughout the modernized world that have pushed us towards a better recognition of the issue, in particular Jack Kevorkian in the States, but this is the first time that a major democracy has allowed for it to happen, well in recent years anyway.”
The ruling does not as yet legalize euthanasia across the country.
“The Germans have always been at the forefront of this kind of thing and this ruling shows how progressive they really are. Euthanasia was obviously common throughout the country and her controlled regions for many years back when being Jewish or a gypsy were seen as terminal diseases and while that fell by the wayside eventually it help set the precedent for this ruling,” continued Waites. “I mean now we are talking about people in comas or suffering some major illness and not simply some perceived lesser ethnicity. I’m sure that’s a step forward but should it stall because of the perception that it can only apply to the ill then I’d imagine we will see major changes in the best German tradition.”
It’s not immediately clear what the ethnic background of the patient in question might have been.
