GREENLAND LAUNCHES ICEBERG AGAINST EASTERN SEABOARD OF CANADA

July 17 2010

St. John’s, Canada – Since mankind first started to group into tribes, war has been waged. Our ancient ancestors fought pitched battles with stakes and clubs. Eventually that evolved into bows and arrows and then firearms. In today’s world much of the war
warfare is fought in much more sublime ways than our ancestors, using fear and economic reprisal as the primary tools of combat, but the reasons and results or often the same. Despite our advances in technology and culture, human beings still fight for the same reasons as our cave dwelling ancestors.

Even though we are living in the most peaceful times in human history there are still many brewing battles across the globe, simmering and waiting for their chance to boil over. While some of those conflicts are ancient and deeply felt by both sides, others exist for more sublime and obscure reasons, things like economic expansion or internal political maneuvering. Some of those conflicts when inevitably explode and others will simply fall away, but as has always been the case new battles and new combatants will emerge to fill that void. Such appears to be the case in the north Atlantic where a surprising duo, Greenland and Canada, have suddenly shown signs of engaging in a battle that few ever would have imagined would have occurred.

“An iceberg, about seven square kilometres, appears to have broken away from the massive iceberg
Greenland coast and is now heading towards the east coast of Canada. Normally they tend to break up. It's really rare to get really large icebergs coming down towards Newfoundland. They tend to be smaller pieces, a little bit more manageable size,” said Darlene Langlois of the Canadian Ice Service. “The berg broke off the coast only July 7 and is of a significant size and could cause severe issues for shipping lanes. While it’s unlikely give its current trajectory that it will make its way to the coast itself, the disruption to traffic in the area is still considered an act of war and we will be taking appropriate action.”  titanic sinking

The berg is about on eighth the size of Manhattan and could cause serious damage should it collide with the coast.

“Icebergs are common through the northern Atlantic region, as anyone who has seen ‘Titanic’ will attest to but the vast majority of those bergs are naturally occurring. Some do break off from major floes but for the most part those can be directly linked to natural events, something that is a little fuzzy in this case,” said Scrape TV International Conflict analyst Mario Martinez. “It’s just a little too convenient. There was a great deal of activity in the area directly surrounding the area where the berg broke away just before it happened and there was no evidence that anything was amiss previous to it actually breaking away. Everyone knows there has been a pitched political battle for control of the arctic region and Greenland and Canada have been two of the biggest rivals for the region.”greenland map

The United States has also been a major player in the region but they have nukes, making an iceberg assault unlikely.

“They don’t really need to make a full assault on the coastline to have success. Something like this could be used as a warning, but could also significantly disrupt the economy of the country leading to issues furthering their claim to the region. Of course Canada has like a thousand times more money than Greenland so that could take a lot of icebergs,” continued Martinez. “Regardless of the results it is clear that a new initiative has been taken up in this battle and it will likely only get a lot uglier from here on out but we will see.”

Canada has reportedly deployed a flotilla of ships armed with giant ice picks towards the iceberg.
