HAITIANS HOPING FOR ANOTHER QUAKE AS MONEY RUNS DRY

July 16 2010

Port-au-Prince, Haiti – It was only six months ago that the world’s attention was focussed squarely on the island nation of Haiti. The devastating earthquake that struck the country’s capital was wreaking untold destruction on the impoverished haiti quake
people of the nation, sparking an international and unilateral support for the country. With money, supplies, and recovery tools flooding into the country as the death toll escalated higher and higher the world had finally taken notice of the plight of the people of the country and even in the midst of all that turmoil and death there was hope that things might change.

Walking the streets of the capital though you would hard pressed to pinpoint any major changes in the country. True, the bodies have been taken away and laid to rest, and true many people have been able to move back into their homes and businesses, but the streets of the city are still littered with rubble, swept from the main thoroughfare but not taken away. The millions of dollars that flooded into the country have brought some changes, but few in the nation have seen any profound changes. Now comes word that many new hospitals in the city, modernized and sophisticated care facilities, will be shutting down in the coming months unless a new source of funding can be found, most likely in the form of another major quake.haiti doctor

“Unless we are able to find new funding many of the hospitals will be closed. These are new critical care facilities with ICUs and paediatric care facilities but when the money runs out, which will happen in most of the country in September, we will have no choice but to close the doors,” said Dr. Gilles Vanier. “We must have more money to continue operations or else all that we have build will collapse much like the buildings did before we were here. We are working hard to try and secure these funds but very few people have been willing to donate recently and that leaves us with few options.”

Actor Sean Penn has been living in the country since the quake occurred but has apparently left all his money at home, leaving him stranded on the island.

“It’s truly an unfortunate situation that so much good will and compassion was haiti earthquake aerial view
directed towards the country in the immediate aftermath of the quake but any kind of sustained effort has fallen away. It seemed for a time that the quake was going to be the best thing that happened to the people of Haiti but that does not appear to have been the case,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “Amidst all the grief and turmoil it appeared that now the world was paying attention to the plight of the people of Haiti and that a real change might come to the country but that does not appear to have been the case. Now they will have to pray for another quake which may or may not come.”

Many fear that another quake will result in donor apathy which in turn will equal smaller donations.haiti earthquake injured person

“I mean no one expected a spaceport in the country or gold lined streets but at least getting the rubble off the street would have been a realistic expectation. Of course if they have another quake that could be solved, just kind of bundle it all into one thing. The good thing about another major quake is that all of the really crummy building have already fallen so there will be a lower death toll,” continued Hander. “The biggest issue will be what kind of support they are able to garner. I mean certain countries like the U.S. will help somewhat that quake had a zeitgeist, a once-in-a-lifetime kind of thing and lightning will almost certainly not strike twice, the Haitians won’t get that lucky.”

It’s believed that even the new hospitals will collapse when another quake hits the city.
