NAOMI CAMPBELL STILL TOO BIG FOR WAR CRIMES TRIBUNAL
July 5 2010
The Hague, Netherlands – There are some people with whom trouble always seems to travel. While some of those issues are undoubtedly simply bad luck, many of them are a result of the actions and inactions of the individuals. Some people take such bad
fortune in stride, recognizing their faults and failings and owning their issues. Others though lash out, blame other people and the world at large for the problems that they have be beset by and in the end up suffering even more misfortune as a result. Woe is the nature of the human condition.
For some people that bad luck simply results in personal problems but for those in the public eye such issues can become major dramas. Two people that had great success in the 1990’s but have in recent years suffered incredible levels of bad luck have now become intertwined in an international scandal that could damn them both. For a time Naomi Campbell was the biggest model in the world, jet-setting around the world and making limitless money. Likewise, Charles Taylor flew very high in the 1990’s as President of Liberia with great power and seemingly limitless funds. Now though Campbell has been embroiled in scandal after scandal and Taylor is currently standing trial for war crimes where the pair has once again come together in their mutual bad luck.
“Naomi is really conflicted over this whole thing and frankly I don’t know the whole reason. She did receive a massive diamond from Taylor many years ago that is for sure but she is doesn’t see a reason to testify about it. Part of it is her genuine affection for Taylor and the ring, but she also doesn’t understand why she was to testify about a ring,” said a Campbell insider. “She believes that her fame is being exploited to try and get a conviction and she doesn’t want to be any part of that. She has always spoken fondly about ‘Chuck’ as she calls him and doesn’t want to see him go to jail.”
Among the many accusations facing Taylor, he is accused of selling diamonds to rebels in Sierra Leone, using child soldiers, and housing members of Al-Qaeda.
“An indictment from the war crimes tribunal is a very serious thing and can’t simply be
dismissed out of hand but one can certainly understand her reticence. She apparently has a great deal of affection for Taylor and she has already spent a great deal of time in court and so the whole thing has to just be very stressful,” said Scrape TV Fashion analyst Fiona Dollak. “Besides, who wants to go to The Hague? I mean how is that even the name of a city? I can only imagine what the accommodations would be like, never mind the food. Perhaps if they were holding the trial in London or Paris it would be a different story but can tell you that if I were called to testify I wouldn’t be showing up either.”
Campbell has routinely ignored questions about the diamond and even walked out of interviews when the topic is broached.
“I don’t think that anyone would suggest that she should be indicted herself no matter how much affection she might or might not have for Taylor. She’s a supermodel after all, you can’t imagine that she would be spending a great deal of time in a place like Liberia or handling too many rough diamonds,” continued Dollak. “I guess the best news out of all of this is the fact that she is still in demand. Most of the other models from that era have sort of fallen away but Naomi has stayed fresh and relevant even at forty years old. No matter the result of this trial the one thing it has proven is that there is one true supermodel still left.”
In a related story fellow former supermodel Cindy Crawford has reportedly been called for jury duty in California.
