NEW IRISH GUN LAW EXPECTED TO BRING INCREASE IN DRUNKEN SHOOTINGS
July 21 2010
Dublin, Ireland – A man’s home is his castle. Since our earliest days inhabiting caves that adage has been true. Broken down into their elemental pieces one could argue that all wars, all conflict in fact, are a result of the defence of the home. Faced with a
belligerent, the defence reaction in regards to one’s own home has the same characteristics when faced with an offending foreign nation or socio-economic system. A home is a home and a threat is a threat, something which is something embedded deep within all human beings.
Of course the integrity of the home can only tested when someone flouts that tradition. Whether it’s a nation of houses or just a single dwelling, the invader represents the threat and the reaction by the owner the embodiment of those millions of years of evolution. Of course we live in a civil society and throughout the majority of the world such reactions to home invaders is extremely limited. In most societies the only resolution to an invader is a call to the police, however in Ireland that has changed with a new law that allows citizens to shoot any invaders. Though the bill still limits under what circumstances in which an intruder may be shot, legislators nonetheless expect a barrage of gun related activity throughout the country particularly as drinking season ramps up.
"The bill is welcomed because it aims to clarify the entitlements of a homeowner when faced with the situation where an uninvited intruder has entered the home. The bill aims to shift the balance of rights back to the homeowner where it should always have been,” said Dan Hanley of the AGSI. “It is intolerable a homeowner should be compelled to retreat in front of an intruder who has entered the home and who may have malign intentions towards the homeowner, the family or the home owner’s property. It is ridiculous to suggest the bill, which attempts to redress a serious legal imbalance, would provide a license to kill or a ‘have-a-go’ charter for homeowners, the vast majority of whom will continue to act with good sense and in a peaceful way.”
In traditional Irish societies burglars were greeted with a pint of Guinness but will now apparently be met with a hail of gunfire.
“There are other countries which have laws like this on the books. The United States for example allows such activity though the enforcement and specific rules vary from state to state. Here though it appears they have created a comprehensive solution to the issue which is going to change the way burglaries are done from now on,” said Scrape TV Crime analyst Willard Weston. “Offhand I’d guess that about 90 percent of the guns in the country are owned by criminals so obviously they are going to be more inclined to bring them along if they could potentially be shot which is going to result in a whole lot of gunplay throughout the country.”
Aside from the remnants of the IRA and their kin it’s believed that very few people in the country have any experience using guns.
“The real danger is that this comes right at the beginning of the busy drinking season which goes from late July to early July. I’m sure that’s a coincidence but it could raise problems, particularly amongst the angry drunks who really shouldn’t be equipped with firearms,” continued Weston. “A little drunken argument could now end up with someone dead and be perfectly legal. While the law is well intentioned, the reality of Irish society may end up causing a lot more harm than good.”
Most Irish legal experts believe that drunk gun owners will have poorer aim, negating the concern, though most of them sounded inebriated.
