PAKISTAN FLOODING LEAVES MILLIONS WET AND ANNOYED: U.N.
August 26 2010
Islamabad, Pakistan – The vast majority of people never have to endure a major natural disaster in their lives. Sure there are huge thunderstorms or blinding snow storms or even the occasional earthquake but the real disasters, the type that kill
hundreds and destroy homes are something the vast majority of people never have to experience. Some though are subject to those disasters over and over again by virtue of where they have chosen, or have no choice, to live and suffer Mother Nature’s wrath over and over again.
That is something the people of northern Pakistan have to deal with on a daily basis, particularly now in the wake of massive floods that have put one fifth of the country under water. With almost two thousand dead, tens of thousands more experiencing symptoms of disease like Dengue Fever and Cholera, and infrastructure and farms across the area completely wiped out with little help imminent, the people of the region know all too well what it’s like to live through a natural disaster. The situation there is not getting any better either as food and water supplies dwindle with no new supplies on the horizon. Amidst all that chaos a new problem is starting to emerge; the people of the region are totally ill equipped to deal with such levels of water and are just getting drenched.
“We knew early on that there was going to be a major problem in this area. Gouging

on umbrellas began almost immediately and the country is already seriously lacking in those tools. This is country of 170 million people and there isn’t even close to that number of umbrellas never mind galoshes or other rain gear. This is getting very ugly,” said a U.N. spokesperson. “People are getting cranky and irritable and that is going to result in flaring tempers eventually. When you factor in all the death, disease, the lack of food and water, and all the miscellaneous stress that goes along with losing everything you own, this whole situation could turn ugly.”
Another major concern is the growing incidents of Athlete’s and Trench foot throughout the region.
“The reality is people are really uncomfortable walking around in the water all the time. I personally have experienced this for a few hours and it is a most uncomfortable

experience. The people of Pakistan deserve better and we are calling on the international community to do whatever they can to get dry foot wear and clean trousers into the region,” continued the spokesperson. “The donations to this crisis have unfortunately been negligible and we need to increase awareness for the people suffering through this. Just imagine what it’s like when you step in a puddle and get water inside your shoe, now imagine that happening all the time. It’s a very uncomfortable feeling and this is the last thing the people in this country need right now.”
The U.N. also reported that many people had lost their shoes in the flooding and are now walking barefoot making them even more uncomfortable.
“Obviously people have lost a lot, some have lost everything in fact, but this is one thing that we can help with. WE may not be able to dry up the monsoon waters or give them back their homes or their limited livelihoods but we can help them feel a little less icky and the world needs to start paying attention,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “These people need our help and it is our duty to help them by providing them with sensible foot wear and waterproof pants. That is the least we can do.”
The U.N. also stated that food would be nice.
