QUEEN ELIZABETH DECIDES TO CANCEL CHRISTMAS

October 15 2010

London, U.K. – In the not so distant past the Monarchy of the United Kingdom was a dominant force through much of the modern world. Aside from having held the largest empire in history, the country has spread her influence throughout the modern world, queen elizabeth II
played major roles in virtually all the world’s major conflicts, and given birth to the current power player on the planet. Things have certainly changed for the grand old lady as her empire has continued to shrink, but she is still a major player in the world and her voice is most certainly heard.

Generally, that voice is used in international relations and economic matters but for a significant part of the world the voice of the country, embodied by the Queen, is more than just rhetoric, it is law. For 16 nations the Queen is not simply a figurehead, she is the state. Countries such as The U.K., Canada, Jamaica, and Australia have their own democratically elected governments but they only serve at the behest of the crown and thus her word is law. While that certainly causes friction at times, the relationship is often civil and rational, something that may change after Queen Elizabeth announced that she was cancelling Christmas this year in order to save a little money.queen elizabeth

“The Queen understands the situation the country is in and wanted to take a lead. Anything seen to be ostentatious was out of the question. Given the current economic climate it was thought that it was appropriate for the Household to show restraint,” said a Buckingham Palace spokesperson. “The simple reality for many people is that these festivities have gotten far too expensive to be entertained. With all the parties, the expensive food, and the presents it has gotten far too difficult for many people to maintain. It was a difficult decision to be sure, but the Queen feels that this is the right thing for the people of the U.K. and for the Commonwealth as a whole.”

It’s not clear how the ban will be enforced across the Commonwealth which numbers 134 million people, the bulk of whom celebrate Christmas in some manner.   sad christmas kid

“I can tell you that we were certainly surprised by this declaration. We were not informed ahead of time in any manner and we are not looking forward to the reaction of the people in our country. We have been in contact with the Prime Minister and he will be in contact with British officials in order to determine the best course to take with this,” said a spokesperson for the Canadian consulate in London. “The people of Canada will be particularly hard pressed by this situation. Our country was not a profoundly impacted by the recession and while some people are certainly suffering, the vast majority of Canadians are doing well and could certainly afford to hold Christmas should they be allowed to do so.”

Canada was the first nation in the Commonwealth and is considered the closest to the U.K. in terms of the governance and legal system.

“The Crown is a legal entity but in all the Commonwealth states acts as essentially a rubber stamp. There have been times in the past when the crown attempted to christmas tree
interfere with the happenings of the individual countries and in almost every instance, the nation has won out. The Crown simple does not have the legislative power over the elected governments that the law states,” said Scrape TV Legal analyst Gabe Hawthorne. “Legal issues aside, the enforcement of such a policy over such a wide area will be extraordinarily difficult and the costs associated with that action will likely erode any savings that can be made by not throwing Christmas parties. I expect there will be a lot of protest over this, well not from Australia likely, they are probably drunk already.”

Australian representatives simply didn’t answer the phone.
