SOME CHILEAN MINERS DECIDE TO STAY TRAPPED RATHER THAN FACE ANGRY WIVES

October 10 2010

Copiapó, Chile – For most people the idea of being trapped hundreds of feet underground with limited access to food and water for more than two months would be unimaginable. Unfortunately, for 33 miners in Chile no imagination is necessary as mine shaft
they continue to live that nightmare every day. Now holding the record for the greatest length of time trapped underground, the miners have finally begun to see the light of day with rescue efforts finally nearing completion. Some men though are not so eager to leave.

While there have been many revelations in the wake of the disaster, perhaps the most significant and damning for some of the men is the personal revelations that have come to light. While there is little doubt that the human drama that has occurred is remarkable, and the tale of survival one that will be told through countless mediums for decades, for some men their complicated personal situations has them second guessing whether or not they even want to emerge. Specifically, a handful of the men have had their personal indiscretions in the form of wives and girlfriends come to light, meaning that the horror awaiting them on the surface may be greater than any they have encountered under the Earth’s surface, prompting many to choose to stay in the damaged mine.

“We have had a number of people requesting that they be allowed to stay in the mine chilean mine rescue
even after we are able to bring them up to the surface. We are in the process of deciding whether or not the structure of the mine will be sufficient to house people for the long term but we believe that it will not be,” said a local official. “While we do certainly sympathize with the individuals and we would like to respect their personal situation, we cannot allow people to be in a potentially dangerous situation of which we would be liable. The danger on the surface is something different entirely.”

The best known miner requesting to be left below the surface is Yonni Barrios who wife and girlfriend were amongst the first responders to the scene.chile mine rescue

“We will make every effort to ensure that the men involved here are safe. That is our first responsibility and we will do so whether it is below the earth or on top of it. We do not wish for a repetition of the types of incidents that have occurred already so we will be appealing for calm should these men indeed come to the surface,” continued the official. “Our battle is to bring these men to the surface in as healthy a shape as possible. We would like them to remain healthy once they arrive on the surface but at this stage that is very much out of our control. Should they remain below, we will respect their decisions.”

Further complicating the extraction is the likelihood of significant compensation and even book and film deals that will play into the various domestic dramas on the surface.

“This is really a unique situation for all types of reasons, the most important of which is chilean miner
the sheer human drama. The fact that they were able to survive at all was something of a miracle but the extended stay and the sheer will to survive is really a tribute to the human spirit, a spirit at least some of these men are more than full of,” said Scrape TV Disaster analyst Walter Lim. “Staying below ground will likely not accomplish their goals however. I mean if they can bring people up, others can certainly go down and so it’s likely that these wives and girlfriends will be able to reach them even below the Earth’s crust. Frankly, they stand a better chance on the surface, with more room to move.”

One man who is apparently single has also requested to remain below, stating that he liked the environment much more than life on the surface.
