TOXIC SLUDGE FLOODING HUNGARY BRINGS LITTLE CHANGE FOR RESIDENTS

October 10 2010

Budapest, Hungary – The collapse of the Soviet Union brought a great deal of rejoicing throughout the world. The west revelled in its triumph over the Evil Empire and countries formerly under the shadow of the Russian Bear embraced their new berlin wall falling
found freedom, at least for a time. Even amidst all the celebrations it was very clear that countries formerly under the U.S.S.R.’s sphere of influence had fallen far behind the rest of the world and that led to, very quickly, to the hard realities of playing seventy years of catch-up.

All those nations have made strides towards modernization in the twenty years since they gained freedom and while some have made great strides in certain areas of their countries, many regions have remained stuck in time. Big cities have certainly come forward but for many in the rural areas of those nations, life has stayed more or less as it was in the past. That is most certainly the case in Hungary which boasts and advanced and sophisticated city as its capital, but where the bulk of the country has remained rural and poor. Now comes word that many of those people are facing the onslaught of water contaminated with toxic sludge after the retaining wall of an industrial plant started to break open. While such an incident would certainly bring great grief to many people throughout the world, for the people of rural Hungary, it is simply another day, just a little wetter and skin-burny.hungary toxic flood

“Probably today, the wall could come down. I cannot say that it will happen surely, but already the risk is there. Cracks have appeared on the northern wall of the reservoir, which makes it very likely that the whole wall will collapse,” said a government spokesperson. “We anticipate that this will bring much more flooding to the region. All of the water is contaminated with red sludge which is highly caustic and very fatal if consumed. We have however issued no new warnings to the people in the region as this is a situation very common to them.”

The sludge is a by-product of aluminum manufacturing which in normal situations is dried into a safe and disposable sludge. Thus far seven people have been killed, far lower than normal for the region.

“We anticipate that eventually when these walls collapse the water will evaporate and poor hungarian village
leave behind this clay which is easily removed by residents. We do not anticipate undertaking an special procedures to remove this material or people from the region as that would mean great costs,” continued the spokesperson. “Because it is so wet and irritating many people are staying indoors which has allowed a great reduction in the kinds of troubles many people get into on a regular basis. While I will stop short of saying that this might be a new procedure for other towns, we will not rule it out at this point.”

A number of towns have been affected by the spill. No one has apparently left their homes.

“The people of Hungary have known little but this life since the beginning. In more toxic sludge hungary
advanced countries the loss of things like electricity and indoor plumbing are a hugely disruptive and difficult to deal with. Something like this toxic sludge would be next to impossible for them, but for poor people it’s a different story,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “The people in these areas don’t know what life without this type of thing is like and so they deal with it, they live with it just as they always have. While this particular type of toxic sludge may be new, it’s all more or less the same thing for them.”

There is apparently no truth to the rumour that the Russian government was somehow involved, though strange men with heavy accents have been seen in the area.
