U.N. SECRETARY GENERAL IMPRESSED WITH SCALE OF DESTRUCTION IN PAKISTAN

August 16 2010

Islamabad, Pakistan – It is impossible to truly experience the sheer human toll that natural disasters can bring while watching video or seeing pictures. Because of common experience we can empathize with the pain and suffering beset upon people ban ki moon
but unless we experience it firsthand the sheer enormity cannot be fathomed and in the case of the massive flooding in Pakistan that is particularly true. With limited coverage throughout most of the world the scale of the destruction is something that few people understand, including the Secretary General of the U.N. Ban Ki-moon.

Ban travelled the afflicted region on the weekend seeing for himself the widespread devastation which has killed only 1500, but affected 20 million throughout the northern region of the country. Now with fears of disease and little hope of relief for the suffering, Ban has called on the international community to aid in the relief efforts and bring new awareness to what has happened in the country. In his short time in the country, Ban visited dozens of locations and spoke with locals trying to assess the true human impact of the disaster and assessing what can be done by the international community to aid in emergency relief and in recovery. Ban, less than four years on the job, made it clear that this is the worst devastation he has yet seen, way worse than anything his predecessor witnessed.

“This has been a heart-wrenching day for me. I will never forget the destruction and ban ki moon smiling
suffering I have witnessed today.. Waves of flood must be met with waves of support from the world. I 'm here to urge the world to step up assistance,” Ban told the world media after his tour. “I will never forget the destruction and suffering I have witnessed today. In the past I have witnessed many natural disasters around the world, but nothing like this. The scale of this disaster is so large. So many people in so many places in so much need. This is much worse than anything Kofi (Annan) ever had to deal with.”

Ban has been an outspoken critic of former Secretary General Kofi Annan after the latter glued all the implements to the Sec Gen desk upon leaving office.

“Inevitably there is always going to be tension between the outgoing and incoming post it prank
administration no matter the level of government. One side is angry about leaving and the other side wants to establish itself, prove itself against the previous people and so that is going to create tension,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “Everyone knows that Annan wasn’t very happy by the end. He served two terms which is standard but he wanted more, particularly after all the scandals that rocked the administration. He wanted a chance to prove himself against those issues and he didn’t have that chance and so he took it out on Ban, which is totally irrational but also totally human. That caused a lot of tension.”

Annan was well known for his obstinance in dealing with the United States but was also beset by a sex scandal and an oil for food controversy involving his son.kofi annan

“None of that was particularly fair to Ban but it happened and that resulted in a lot of animosity from him. Since he took office Ban has been trying to wash away pretty much everything Annan and his people did, he’s been trying to outdo him and this is exactly what has happened here,” continued Hander. “It’s been a pretty lame three years but with the earthquakes this year and now this, well he has something going on. We’ll have to see how bad things get because there is still a ways to go if you are going to compete with something like 9/11. We’ll have to wait and see I guess.”

Ban reportedly called Annan immediately after visiting the area but only got his voicemail. He apparently left a nasty message.
