UMBRELLA SALES SPIKE IN FLOODED NORTHWEST PAKISTAN

Peshawar, Pakistan – The modern state of Pakistan is still a young nation. The roots of the country date back hundreds of years but it was only in 1947 when the current version of the state was established. In that time the country has grown in leaps and

strides. Possessing one of the largest and best trained militaries in the world, a growing economy, and an array of nuclear missiles Pakistan has positioned itself as a major player in the near future of the planet.
Still, Pakistan has troubles. Issues with neighbours, notably India and Afghanistan, are the best known issues but there are deeper and perhaps more profound concerns for the future of the nation. Despite the strength of her infrastructure and the relative wealth in certain areas of the country, much of the nation is still a wild west, a lawless land with peril at every corner. With 170 million people such chaos and anarchy is not to be taken lightly. Unlike the wild days in the United States that massive population and access to significant weapons could potentially destabilize the country and ultimately the entire country. However for thousands such concerns are on the backburner for now as they struggle to keep dry and keep up with the demand for umbrellas that has exploded in the wake on Monsoon rains in the north western area of the country.
“Aerial monitoring is being conducted, and it has shown that whole villages have washed away, animals have drowned and grain storages have washed away. Nearly three dozens (sic) helicopters are being used by the Pakistani military and the international community trying to help those who have been stranded,” said government spokesperson Latifur Rehman. “There are thousands of people on each side of the banks trying to get across to safety. The navy has also arrived. The destruction is massive. We are working to resolve these issues but it may be some time before things are back to normal. We are working on a plan to bring umbrellas and waders in from other parts of the country.”
Thus far, more than 1100 people have been killed and up to 1.5 million displaced or slightly inconvenienced.
“Think about the trouble that the United States had when it came to dealing with Hurricane Katrina. That happened in the wealthiest and most industrious country on the planet. It wasn’t in some out of the way area, it was in a major urban metropolis yet it still caused millions of dollars in damage and killed almost 2000. For a country like Pakistan the challenge is increased a hundredfold,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “This area is problematic at best in normal times and in the midst of a disaster it is something else entirely. The roads, the personnel, and the sheer number of people are totally overwhelming to a system that is already limited and that is going to cause a lot of problems and ultimately a lot of deaths before aid can get into the region.”
At least 27,000 people are also trapped by the floods.
“Clean drinking water, medical aid, and housing are some the most immediate needs but basics like weather gear are also important. Umbrellas, galoshes, and rain jackets are very sparse throughout the region and there is very little domestic production which is creating a lot of problems and getting a lot of people wet,” continued Hander. “They are trying but I suspect that this flood will force them to re-examine how they deal with these types of crises. Hopefully they will put some money into the umbrella infrastructure and keep these people dry in the future.”
Rain gear gouging has reportedly been on the rise throughout the region.
