CHOLERA DEATH TARGET ON TRACK IN HAITI
November 8 2010
Port-au-Prince, Haiti – One could be forgiven if there was a just a moment when you thought that the wrath of the Gods had been unleashed on Haiti. Nearly a year after the massive earthquake devastated the country the people were still struggling
to gather themselves when Hurricane Tomas struck the island leaving in its wake a new swath of destruction that will likely continue to torment the people of the country for months and years to come.
Amidst that, a fresh outbreak of cholera has started to spread across the afflicted region with more than 7000 sick and a death toll exceeding 500. In the face of that, it would seem, at first blush anyway, that some otherworldly wrath had been visited on the people of the region. The reality of course is far more mundane than that. The country of Haiti is one of the most impoverished in the world which results in poor infrastructure and absent medical care making natural disasters much worse than they would be in a wealthier nation. Rationalizations aside however, the reality of life in Haiti make the reasons almost irrelevant. Luckily for some life in the country is in the past and as the death toll increases even more people will be freed of the misery that is so oft visited upon that little island forgotten by the world.
“The storm has passed. Now we are bandaging the wounds that the storm has left. On one side we have the rivers that will carry the bacteria everywhere, and on the other hand, we have the people who have been displaced that could also carry the bacteria,” said Haitian President René Préval. “We have lost many people in the last year and while that is certainly upsetting we can be reassured that they are in a better place, free from the trauma and turmoil that has been visited upon us over the last few years. Their suffering is at an end.”
Typhoid fever is also starting to spread across the country likely meaning that the death toll will increase in the next few days.
“For most of the western world Cholera has been all but wiped out. Unfortunately
there are some areas where it is still endemic and in tragic circumstances like this it
appears again and can do a lot of damage. Well, in a country like the United States it would be a tragedy, in a country like Haiti it’s more a sweet relief,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “The reality is that life in Haiti in non-tragic times is hard. When these kinds of things happen, which is fairly often, difficulty takes on a whole new meaning. Over the last few years the country has seen hurricanes and earthquakes and now plague. I’m not a religious person but it seems like someone out there has something against the people of Haiti, or something is simply trying to put them out of their misery.”
With little access to medical treatment and clean drinking water, it’s believed likely that infections and deaths will increase.
“Realistically life wasn’t going to get a whole lot better in the country and so it is a kind

of relief that these people have been put out of their misery. In countries with access to proper medical facilities cholera is a very treatable ailment that has no long term effects, but that just isn’t the case in Haiti. The lucky ones are the ones who died first,” continued Hander. “There was a hope when the earthquake hit that the country would improve, that it would benefit from the influx of support, but little has changed and so those who have passed may truly be the lucky ones. Rather than seeing this latest tragedy as that, it should really be seen as an escape for those forced to live this rather miserable life.”
The rural nature of the afflicted region has been making medical resupply challenging and has prompted many efforts to simply be abandoned to the winds.
