DESPITE CONCERNS GEOLOGISTS DETERMINE THAT CHINA IS IN NO DANGER OF COLLIDING WITH THE U.S.
February 7 2011
Washington, D.C. – The world today is more interconnected than at any time in human history, at least since we started to migrate from Africa. That move from our ancestral home to all corners of the globe gave us the diversity that now exists in our

species, but also drew lines between peoples. Lines, whether based on race, religion, borders, or any other myriad of issues, that have caused the deaths of millions of people in our long and bloody history, something many people may finally be solved with our growing interdependence.
In today’s world, old rivals are partners, areas such as Europe which have been drenched in blood are now partners, something unimaginable even twenty years ago. There are certainly many factors that have contributed to the growing connection between the world’s peoples with perhaps the biggest one being financial. The spread of global finance has created new relationships and occasionally odd bed fellows, perhaps the biggest one of late is the coupling of the United States and China, likely the forefront of the future of the planet. As the most significant economic and military powers on the globe, it seems inevitable that the two nations will be major partners and possible combatants in the future of the planet however despite concerns, geologists have confirmed that the two nations are in no immediate danger of colliding with one another.
“It is certainly true that the plates of the planet have shifted dramatically over the last few million years, and they have drifted in a direction that would indicate a collision course between Asia and the Americas, but we do not think that is likely. Aside from the fact that this process takes a very long time, these plates are not floating bodies, they have more or less found their spot now,” said Dr. Philip Andrews of Georgetown University. “There will still be some movement but there is no reason to think that the two plates will collide, at least not in the next few years when it really matters.”
The west coast of the United States and the bulk of mainland China are located on different plates making a collision all the more unlikely.
“Essentially there is this mass, the huge Pacific plate, which would interfere with any kind of drift or movement that would result in the two continents colliding with one another. If the two plates moved towards one another it would create a mass in the centre, resulting in a new continent between the two,” continued Andrews. “It is not just unlikely, it just isn’t going to happen. There is also no chance that Beijing and Washington will ever collide unless they move the cities. I mean I guess they could symbolically collide, but they will never physically collide. It just cannot happen under any circumstances.”
Despite assurances however, many political pundits on both sides of the ocean are convinced that a conflict is coming.
“From a pure geological perspective it doesn’t make any sense but it’s like the old adage
says, where there’s a will there’s a way. Money talks in this relationship and this is a very long distance thing they have going on and getting closer would certainly help the situation, and possibly diffuse any friction,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “Of course then the debate as to who moves would likely come up. It would probably make more sense for China to split and motor over to the east coast as their continent won’t fall apart if they leave, but they have also lived there much longer. It’s a tough situation to be sure and it will be interesting to see where they go with it.”
It’s widely believed that the U.S. has no plans on moving.
