EVERYONE TO GET A CHANCE AT BEING PRESIDENT IN TUNISIA
January 16 2011
Tunis, Tunisia – In theory, democracy is a much different model than what we have put into practice. In theory, democracy allows for anyone to choose their government and for anyone to be able to be a part of that government. In practice though,
nothing could be further from that model. While democracy has certainly been the most successful government system yet established, it is far from the design. Very few people have a serious chance at being successful in government, at say being President, no matter what the system says can happen.
However, governing systems are always in a state of flux. Old systems give way to new ones and established are constantly evolving, mutating to the new social and political realities of the world. Democracy, as the most widespread and influential of all systems, is no exception to that change. Because of the massive number of influences and trials that that the system faces put it in a position where change isn’t only a reality, but also a necessity as the world grows in both size and awareness. While new models are usually subtle, a new idea in Tunisia, based on the American sport of T-
Ball, will allow everyone in the country to have a shot at being President and participating in the first real democracy that has ever been established.
“There is shouting on the streets, gunfire in the air, and people are pouring out from everywhere with the establishment of this new system. Even the prisons have been emptied with people coming onto the streets looking for their chance to rule, their chance to be President. This is something many people in this country never thought could happen,” said a government spokesperson. “This is a great period in the history of the country and a shining example of what democracy can do. For the first time the poor and the wealthy will truly be equal and here in Tunisia we will have created a new standard for the entire world.”
The new system was initiated by the departure of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali who had ruled over the country for 23 years.
“We hear about these kinds of things happening but rarely do we actually see it happening. This entire event, this sea change in the history of this country and perhaps for all of democracy, was initiated by young man who lit himself on fire after finding that he wasn’t able to get on the ballot. This entire change came from that small protest,” said Scrape TV African analyst Claude Contee. “Obviously he still won’t be able to get on the ballot or have his turn as President. The system may change but it won’t change to a point where it will allow dead people to rule. That would just be irresponsible on so many levels and would really stink up the Presidential palace. I mean other people will have to live there after all.”
The graduate student had also had his fruit cart confiscated by police, something that would automatically preclude him from running for office.
“Produce carts have always been a major part of Tunisian politics. It’s deeply embedded in the culture dating back hundreds of years at least. Basically, if you couldn’t hold a produce cart you couldn’t hold office, at least in the past. Now though the highest office will be available to everyone regardless of the kid of cart they push,” continued Contee. “I would hope that this change brings about change across the continent. The people of Africa surely need this kind of radical change. I frankly doubt it, but maybe it could still bring some small, subtle changes that could benefit everyone. It will be hard to get rid of the dirt piling rule in Angola, but we can always dream.”
Ben Ali is reportedly in hiding, trying to establish his own fruit stand.
