FRANCE TO BOMB LIBYA AND THEN QUICKLY GIVE IN TO REBEL FORCES
March 10 2011
Paris, France – There is little doubt that the ongoing turmoil in Libya is a much different situation than anything else that has gone on in North Africa in recent months. Unlike Tunisia and Egypt, the dictatorship in that country has taken a far
more aggressive stance towards protestors and the entire country has quickly descended into full-fledged civil war as a result, owing in large part to the massive oil supplies in the country. As a result of all these factors, the rest of the world has been transfixed on the country trying to affect some kind of resolution.
While many options have been presented, and a few enacted, little has been done to actually curb the violence in the country which from an outside perspective appears to be getting worse by the day. While there is likely not going to be any clean or neat solution to the issue, unlike happened with Libya’s neighbours, the desire to end the bloodshed is starting to become a clarion call around the world. Now at least one country, France, has taken the first dramatic steps towards trying to put an end to the chaos in the country by acknowledging the transitional government and planning for airstrikes on Gaddafi compounds, and then quickly running back home while others sort out the mess.
“The French people have spoken very clearly, they want the violence in Libya to end. President Sarkozy is not only obligated to follow the will and desire of the French people but also his conscience and he feels that such actions are necessary for the long term stability of the nation. Sometimes violence needs to be met with violence,” said a spokesperson for the French government. “France has no desire to conquer the country. The proposal will involve specific strikes against specific targets and once that is accomplished French pilots will fly home and that will be the end of things. France has a long history in Africa and feels a certain kind of avuncular responsibility to the people who live there.”
Former French colony Ivory Coast is also currently enduring post-election violence which many observers fear is descending into civil war. Sarkozy had no comment on the situation there.
“Libya is a very delicate situation for a lot of reasons. It has oil and is major provider to Europe; it has very porous borders; the situation there has gotten largely out of hand. Many of these things are of course not new to Africa, though new to this area of the country, but it provides a particularly sticky situation,” said Scrape TV African analyst Claude Contee. “In most cases in Africa there is limited infrastructure and limited ability to impact the rest of the world, it’s the ghetto of planet Earth but in the north there is a real active entanglement with everyone else and so action there is both required and treacherous at the same time.”
Libya provides about ten percent of Europe’s oil and holds large amounts in reserves.
“I think everyone was breathing a sigh of relief when things went over so smoothly in
the other countries, where no one had to really do anything other than get on TV and proclaim their love of democracy, but of course that isn’t the situation here and the ties this country has makes things tough,” continued Contee. “Bombing the place will certainly change the dynamic and it’s an age old policy by these former colonial powers but I think that this situation will take a little more hands on approach. Blowing things up and then letting things sort out by themselves has certainly worked in Sub-Saharan Africa but may not be such an effective practice in Libya. Of course we won’t know until we try I suppose.”
Britain, the Netherlands, and Portugal have all expressed support for the French plan.
