IRAN LOOKING TO REVAMP OUTDATED STONING PROCEDURES
December 7 2010
Tehran, Iran – It is only in the last hundred years or so that the debate over capital punishment has been a topic of discussion. Great societies of the past have all employed some form of capital punishment for crimes deemed too destructive to
civilized society. As our collective social mores have changed however so too have our attitudes towards how we treat those who decide to flout the laws of society. Throughout the world, capital punishment has declined dramatically and in many of those countries which still employ it, it is used for only the most heinous of crimes.
However, not all nations ascribe to the same philosophy of judicious use of executions. A handful of nations still employ the method of punishment for simple and sometimes innocuous crimes. While many dismiss those nations as simply poor or possessed of a largely ignorant population, certain examples – such as Russia, Indonesia, South Korea and Iran – show that such attitudes can exist even in sophisticated populations. However even in these countries there are differing attitudes towards what crimes deserve capital punishment and which do not. There is also a large gap in attitudes towards what methods should be used for executions and in some nations those attitudes are changing, most notably in Iran where the tried and true method of stoning is undergoing a major change 5000 years in the making.
“Basically, the process of stoning hasn’t changed since it was invented. Yes more modern materials are used and yes there are regulations on the size of stones used, but the core nature of stoning is still essentially the same. It is bloody, messy, and takes far too long for the liking of many people,” said Iranian execution expert Ahmad Raad. “It has become very cumbersome and laborious particularly as changing mores in the country require more and more of these actions to be undertaken. The simple truth of the matter is that many people in the country are growing weary of this process and we are looking to refine it.”
Traditional stoning requires digging a deep pit, covering the accused in a shroud, burying them up to their neck, and throwing medium sized stones at their head until death.
“In any system it is always good practice to keep things as simple as possible. This

reduces resistance from the people having to actually perform the tasks and makes them not only compliant in carrying out the actions, but actually enthusiastic about them,” continued Raad. “There has been great concern about the level of engagement in the stoning process but we feel these new procedures will go a long way towards resolving those concerns. There has also been a sentiment in recent years that the procedure as is simply isn’t enough to facilitate growing demand and adherence to more modern attitudes towards the process. We feel that these new techniques will change that dramatically.”
Raad did not outline what exactly will be entailed in the new process but anew stone refining facility in the northern part of the country has apparently been working nonstop in recent weeks.
“2009 was a peak year for stoning in Iran and this year we have seen a dramatic drop

off. At first glance this might have been a result of changing attitudes in the country towards the process of stoning, but it’s clear now that they have simply turned to other methods temporarily while this new procedure is refined,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “Obviously they had a heavy load last year and in cases like that you need to make changes and even pull back in order to reduce the possibility of user fatigue. I’d imagine we will see the numbers back up next year, the process is just so popular that it can never really go away.”
Traditionally adultery was the principle reason for stoning but the Iranian government is also considering expanding the scope of crimes punishable by death including jay walking and over abundant gas.
