LUCRATIVE SOUTH AFRICAN URINE MARKET GETS A BOOST IN DURBAN
November 9 2010
Durban, South Africa – For as long as life has existed on this planet it has been excreting waste. No matter the size or the disposition of the species, all life excretes waste by-product, material that generally gets tossed away, removed far from that
place in which one lives. Virtually every species on Earth disposes of its waste in some way, or at the very least puts it far out of reach of things like food supplies or sleeping areas.
Human beings have of course industrialized that process in most countries by moving waste product to designated areas, treating it, and moving on with life. That process has allowed human beings to dramatically increase life spans and expand outwards into deeper reaches of once unmanageable terrain. Waste though is still a burden to modern societies. Such removal and treatment options do not come cheaply and the infrastructure that is required to remove the waste from homes is extensive and expensive, costs which are often turned back onto the creators of that waste. However that is not the case everywhere as evidenced by the growing urine market in South Africa. Once a black market operation, the government of Durban has now gotten one board with urine collection and have made a central point of their growing economic and environmental stimulus.
“South Africa is a water-stressed country. With the increase in demand for drinking water, we cannot afford to flush this valuable resource down the sewer. If we can turn the toilets into a source of revenues, then they will want to use the toilets,” said a spokesperson for the Durban government. “For a great number of years these markets have been dominated by less than quality fellows but we are hoping to change that. There is real money to be saved in recycling waste products and we want to ensure that we are gaining that benefit rather than criminal elements sneaking into people’s toilets in the middle of the night, metaphorically speaking of course.”
There have been sporadic reports of urine theft throughout the Durban area but most material is taken through shakedown methods.
“We’ve been introducing these dry toilets throughout the city and though people are
hesitant to use them once we assure them that they are safe, and that they will have the protection of police, they are more ready to use them. This has been the biggest issue and we have had a few incidents of these toilets being destroyed by the more unseemly elements at work in our city,” continued the spokesperson. “In rural areas we have not had the same problems, but in urban areas many people are hesitant to use these toilets. We feel that over the long term people will come to embrace these toilets and we will be able to push out the criminal elements who have sought control over our bodily fluids.”
The toilets also recycle feces. All the waste is turned into water and fertilizer for farming.
“This is an interesting new process that takes something that we have been seeing as a burden and makes it into a resource. While I doubt sincerely that this will take off in the majority of the world, it is this kind of thinking that we really need in order for the world to get back on its collective feet and start being responsible,” said Scrape TV Energy analyst Mark Kettle. “The problem in the vast majority of the modern world is that waste disposal is so well organized and so tightly controlled that I doubt anyone will be able to wrest control from the cartels. In South Africa it’s a different story, hopefully that means they will be able to conserve for the rest of us.”
Apparently, most people in Durban are also hesitant to use the toilets because they don’t like touching poop.
