NORTH KOREAN FIREWORKS DISPLAY GOES AWRY AND PUMMELS SOUTH KOREA

November 23 2010

Seoul, South Korea – Over the last six decades there has been little else but tension on the Korean peninsula. A once proud and successful region of the world, the area has become a livings, breathing example of how thoroughly divided people can north korea south korea map
become. In many ways, the divide between the North and South is a microcosm of the greater human experience, drawing a line between people, between families, a line that can never be crossed and a wound that may never be healed.

Because of that tension is quite understandable that occasional outbursts occur between the two countries. Though such conflagrations are often warranted, there are certainly times when small incidents or even accidents can bring about the most hostile of reactions. Such tensions were readily apparent last March when a North Korean vessel apparently sunk a South Korean ship, killing 46 sailors. The details of that particular incident have never come out publicly and despite rabid accusations and detailed foreign investigations, no solid evidence of North Korean involvement has been discovered. Nonetheless, that incident helped raise tensions between the two nations, tensions that reached a peak today after an apparent fireworks accident. The bombarding of a South Korean island today raised alarms throughout the region and revelations from the North indicating that the attack was merely a celebration gone awry have done little to quell the tensions between the two countries.

“The firing of artillery by North Korea on Yeonpyeong Island constitutes an north korea attacks south korea
indisputable armed provocation against the Republic of Korea. Making matters worse, it even indiscriminately fired against civilians. Such actions will never be tolerated,” said a spokesperson for the South Korean government. “Enormous retaliation should be made to the extent that North Korea cannot make provocations again. The South Korean military will retaliate against any additional acts of provocation in a resolute manner. The North Korean authorities will have to take full responsibility for the incident.”

The explosions on the border island of Yeonpyeong killed two, wounded thirteen, and destroyed a number of buildings.

“There is no doubt at this stage that the incendiaries launched against the island came korean dmz
from the North. This isn’t like the ship incident in March. Here there is direct evidence of the launch point and the direction of the projectiles but what is not clear at this point is why and what the nature of the explosives are,” said Scrape TV North Korean analyst Lee Joo-Chan. “Yes they were military shells, real artillery, but few people outside the region understand that those are often a part of North Korean celebrations. High level explosives are frequently a part of celebrations throughout the country and it is very possible that these particular devices were a part of that celebration and they simply went off course. Those kinds of things happen on occasion when dealing with explosives of any kind and it may very well be that that is what has happened here.”

The North just recently announced a new uranium enrichment plant which some speculate could have been the cause for such a celebration.kim jong il smiling

“In this region there is always going to be tension and any incident, whether intentional or not, is understandably going to be perceived as a hostile action. However cooler heads need to rise to the top, people need to remain calm and try to ascertain the truth rather than be reactionary,” continued Lee. “There will be a lot of accusations and anger over the next few days as the investigations begin, but particularly in this region people need to try and remain calm and rational. No one wants millions of people to die because of a few fireworks.”

Reportedly at least three dozen people in the North have been killed by errant fireworks in recent months.
