OFFICIALS TAKE NOTE AS ITALIAN RESIDENTS NOW START COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SMELL

December 22 2010

Terzigno, Italy – Tourism has always been an important component of any economy, but in the modern and interconnected world is not only important, it is essential. With manufacturing becoming almost the exclusive domain of countries such as China and tourists
India, western nations are finding themselves routinely with domestic financial difficulties, leading them to rely on service sectors, and thus tourism, in order to keep the economy on track. There are few nations anymore that can simply see tourism as a benefit, as a side dish. It is quickly becoming the main course.

Of course, some places are more compelling to visit than others. Few people will make a long term investment in a trip to Boise or Moosejaw, but for certain countries virtually every destination is something compelling, just by virtue of history and the charm of marketing. The bulk of those countries are of course in Europe which compels people of all backgrounds, and at the top of that heap are a few countries, Italy arguably being chief amongst them. Like any place however, the dream of an exotic locale is often greater than the reality and for millions of visitors every year, Italy often disappoints even as it engages. One reason for that, repeated over and over, is the smell which is now finally getting to the noses of local residents.hospital waste

“We have to keep the children inside, with the doors and windows shut, but even then it's not enough. It's terrible. The state has abandoned us. We see the garbage trucks coming in at night and dumping everything in the landfill, toxic waste, hospital waste,” a local resident told Reuters. “This is disgusting, we wake with it every day and have to go to sleep with the smell. I cannot continue to live like this and we have received no help from our politicians who seem only interested in helping themselves as they live far from the smell.”

Politicians do live upwind of the bulk of the smell in the city though visitors report a pungent order in that area as well. Locals appear immune to smell.old italian town

“I’ve been to Italy twice and visited a number of cities throughout the country and I can tell you that it does have this distinctive smell. Some places are worse than others but it is still there and unlike anything in any other country. It’s not the worst place in the world, that would be India, but it’s still pretty bad,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “I can’t imagine what it is like for foreigners now that locals are starting to smell it. I mean it was bad before, but now it must be absolutely horrendous. Naples was actually one of the better cities I visited so it could be that they have a lower tolerance than people in, say Venice, but I mean it’s all relative. It’s a pretty smelly country.”

Much of the stench emanates from a local dump which has also been polluting the soil and water table with carcinogens.tergizino italy

“I mean I guess this has really become a health hazard. It always seemed like a health hazard walking into that mess before but now that it is a bona fide health issue, well that’s something else. It must really be bad now that so many people appear to complaining,” continued Hander. “As usual a lot of the blame is being placed at the feet of organized crime but c’mon, they’ve been using that as an excuse for decades. If it’s not Mussolini then its mobsters, the whole thing just stinks and now I guess they realize that.”

Local officials first responded to complaints from visitors in 1994, but only now that the stench has reached the noses of locals has the issue become a major concern.
