PLAN FOR AUSTRALIA TO ABSORB NEW ZEALAND BACK ON TRACK FOLLOWING EARTHQUAKE

March 12 2011

Canberra, Australia – For outsiders, at least before the ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies hit theatres, there was little difference between Australia and New Zealand. Even today the vast majority of people consider the smaller sibling state as more or less just an paul hogan
extension of the shrimp-loving neighbour to the west. The people of New Zealand would beg to differ on that attitude, of course, but aside from their participation in movies about rings and dwarves, their contribution to the wider world hasn’t earned them much in the way of a voice.

That limited status is likely a result of a number of factors including geographic isolation and a relatively small population, but whatever the reason, the core assumption remains potent for many outsiders. Some of those outsiders are not just distant observers either, many in Australia have also had a similar attitude towards the Kiwi nation and in the wake of the earthquake that flattened Christchurch, those voices have become louder and louder. Renewing an old proposition, many are using that quake to try and bring New Zealand back into the fold and absorb the population and land into Australia proper effectively eliminating the political and social structure of the nation and officially making it a part of Australia, just as many assumed it had long been already.christchurch earthquake

“It’s quite clear from this quake that New Zealand is not really capable of taking care of herself. Christchurch was totally devastated in that quake, which is tragic, but it’s the reaction to the event that most concerns us. Australia gave all kinds of aid to them after the quake which shows that they were not able to deal with the issue themselves,” said Gavin Wilson, one of the bills principle advocates. “It’s quite clear from this event that the people of New Zealand are not capable of taking care of themselves and that they aid from other nations in order to survive, which is exactly what we are proposing.”

Multiple variations of such a proposal have been issued in the past but all have fallen flat, generally as a result of opposition from Australians themselves who don’t particularly want to absorb the country.

“We don’t necessarily see the addition of New Zealand as a new state as an economic plus, at least not proactively. What we do see it as is an opportunity to reduce costs related to external aid. If we finance repairs in Australia the money is spent on Australians, but when we give to another nation that money is lost,” continued Wilson. “There are also concerns about ethnic and social interactions but there are no plans to integrate New Zealanders into Australian society. I think both sides would agree that that would be far too difficult and not really worth doing. Obviously there are a lot of issues to work out here, including how to move the country, but once we pass this bill we can work in the mechanics.”

Australia and New Zealand are separated by a little over 2000 kilometres and the Kiwi nation is affixed to the ocean floor.hobbits

“Aside from the physical challenges in fusing these two nations, there will be a lot of cultural concerns. Like Canada to the United States, Austria to Germany, or Korea to Japan, these two countries have an awkward big brother-little brother kind of relationship that has created a lot of bitterness and that will be an issue that needs to be resolved,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “No one would expect this to be an easy transition of course, but that doesn’t mean you avoid it completely. Some things need to be done even when they are difficult, even when people don’t want it to happen. The question then is just making them comply.”

A recent poll showed that the majority of New Zealanders had no interest in joining Australia but no one really cares what they say.
