POLL SHOWS 92 PERCENT OF AFGHANS HAVEN’T HEARD OF 9/11, POLLS

March 14 2011

Washington, D.C. – There is no disputing the fact that Afghanistan is a rough country. Lined with mountains, filled with rugged countryside, and possessed of a population that has been more or less left behind the rest of the world over the last afghan girl
few decades, Afghanistan is filled with evidence that lead to the quite correct interpretation of the nation as a wild and untamed environment. Looking at history, people have often assumed that what is past is present, and given the ongoing conflict consuming the country those pundits would appear to be correct.

Afghanistan isn’t, as many people believe, a nearly invulnerable country but her history simply doesn’t follow that idea. The country has been conquered over and over again by everyone from the Mongols to the Persians. In the 1950’s the nation was developing quickly, far ahead of many of her neighbouring nations. However decades of civil war has eroded that growth, polarized the nation, and left many of the nation’s inhabitants far behind the rest of the world in terms of development. That has largely fractured any idea of Afghan identity and left many people simply out of touch with the wider world, as evidenced by recent polls that show 92 percent of the population have never heard of the 9/11 attacks, and only slightly more have heard of polls until recently.old radio

“It is clear that in many parts of the country we have not done an adequate job of explaining the nature of or the reasons for the foreign forces in the country. That has led many people to believe simply what they have been told rather than seeing the big picture,” said a spokesperson for the International Council on Security and Development (ICOS). “Most people simply don’t understand the nature of the forces here and almost no one knows the principle motivation for the foreign forces in the country which shows that the effort is falling behind in many areas.”

The report credited part of the reason for the ignorance as a result of lack of television and internet through most of the rural countryside.world trade center attack

“Forces there need to realize that they are fighting in a foreign land, filled with people with a totally different perspective on life and how it is lived. Until we can begin communicating our mission there in an effective way there are going to be limits in how far we can go in winning the war,” continued the spokesperson. “There are actually a large number of people throughout the country who don’t even know what country they live in themselves, or even that they live in a country, and so these grand issues of politics and nationhood are simply beyond the capacity of many. Most didn’t even understand what a poll was, something totally foreign to us in the west and evidence of the schism between peoples.”

Most Afghans, about 51 percent, also had not heard of roads.

“There is a very real danger that once the coalition forces pull out next year that the afghan kids
Taliban will simply slide back in. That fear is nothing new, but with this news that virtually no one understands the reasons for the war in the first place it is highly unlikely that they will gain any new supporters,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “People don’t need to agree with the issues, but they need to understand that there are genuine concerns. For many people in Afghanistan the argument simply hasn’t been heard, or even made, and that is resulting in very poor polling numbers. These numbers show definitively that the war, and polling, are totally foreign concepts for many people in the country.”

Another recent poll showed that polls have been on the decline throughout the country.
