SYDNEY TO BE EXCAVATED FOR NATURAL GAS DEPOSIT
December 18 2010
Sydney, Australia – There is little doubt that our growth as a species over the last few thousand years has been a remarkable thing. Despite being on the planet for a relatively short period of time, human beings have been able to grow and spread wider

than any other species in the billions of years that life has been on the planet. What is perhaps all the more remarkable is how much of that growth occurred in the last century as we radically altered our interaction with the natural world and the population more than tripled through that century.
As amazing as that growth has been, it has also brought burdens. As we continue to expand ever outwards our demands on the planet and her resources are becoming ever more profound. In particular, our demand for energy in a world almost wholly dependent on that resource has reached peak levels with our demands starting to outstrip supplies. The world though does provide and as we continue to use up many of the resources already discovered, new deposits seem to appear, allowing us to continue our expansion. The latest of those discoveries, an apparent massive natural gas deposit, has now fallen afoul of our own growth with its placement directly underneath Sydney, the largest city in Australia. Unfettered though, officials have begun exploratory drilling and have grand plans to simply excavate the city of more than four million people.
“This is a fabulous reservoir of gas and energy that we desperately need. We were very surprised to discover this supply under the streets on which we walk, but sometimes the best things come from unexpected places,” said a government spokesperson. “Right now we are going to begin exploratory drilling in the suburb of St. Peters but we expect that this reserve will be large enough that it will require wide expansion. We are currently working on a plan to dig wherever is necessary to collect this resource, even if that means razing the whole city.”
Australia is the per capita worst polluter in the world and has committed to reducing pollution levels by 2020.
“Energy is always going to be a need, frankly, in one way or another. The reality is, no
matter what environmental activists say, that we have simply not found a way to
make renewable energy sources practical on a wide scale. Sure solar panels and wind farms can manage small areas, but particularly in the developing world that just isn’t enough,” said Scrape TV Energy analyst Mark Kettle. “Unfortunately Sydney may not be an isolated incident. Many major cities were established well before the discovery of these deposits and now they have been built right on top. Sydney is one of those cities but it may not be the last one. I wouldn’t surprised if we start seeing energy deposits under a number of major cities, which could result in the razing of those places as well.”
Cities such as New York and London have been investigated but are apparently built on piles of junk.
“Sydney is a beautiful city and home to a great number of people but energy, gas, could help a whole lot of people and the environment. It would be unheard of to raze a major city such as Sydney but if there is enough gas there, well it could be worth it,” continued Kettle. “There is a valid debate as to gains and losses, meaning how much energy will be expended is destroying the city versus what is gained in natural gas, but that likely won’t stop the destruction. This is Australia after all, they get something in their heads and that’s it.”
Despite a lack of natural gas deposits, nearby Brisbane, the capital, has also begun plans to begin full scale razing.
