U.S. BORDER PATROL BEEFING UP PRESENCE IN AFGHANISTAN
January 3 2011
Kabul, Afghanistan – Over the last ten years much has been made of the history of Afghanistan. Since the United States and her allies stepped foot in the country many a critic and pundit has cited the long and bloody history of the nation as sure fire
evidence that the conflict there can never be won. While it is certainly true that many great empires have tried and failed to have military success in the nation, the reality is many others did succeed throughout history, something the United States is still working desperately to accomplish.
There are of course many challenges in the conflict in that country, as there are in virtually all conflicts. An embedded enemy, rough terrain, and a growing lack of political and social will both in country and at home all contribute to the difficulties in managing the war but those challenges do not mean that they are giving up, in fact quite the opposite. With increased drone attacks and ongoing surges in the country, the current administration realizes that the war is a long way from being finished, something Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano made clear during her recent trip to the country in which she vowed to increase security and, much like at home, made plans to increase border security in order to prevent illegal’s from entering the country.
“Seeing is worth a thousand words. This all involves safety and security in this part of the world. And that is something that has direct connection as well to the United States. We really focussed on what you need to do first by way of having a port and a port infrastructure,” Napolitano told CNN. “You never seal these borders. They are too big, they are complicated and the notion of sealing a border is not realistic instead the solution it to try and force as much traffic through those border crossings as possible.”
Similar techniques have been employed in the United States, efforts that have stemmed the flow of Canadians in the north but had limited impact on Mexicans from the south.
“In many ways you are dealing with a very similar problem in Afghanistan as you are in
the United States. Foreigners are coming into the country and causing problems,
problems that could be dealt with if it was isolated to domestic people but with the influx of traffic and experience you quickly lose a handle on the situation,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “You can see that very clear on the border with Mexico now that the drug trade has increased so dramatically. A similar problem exists in Afghanistan only with terrorism. The one advantage they have there is there aren’t nearly as many Mexicans trying to cross the Afghan border, the majority of those people are Pakistanis or Al Qaeda and Taliban agents moving freely back and forth. That is also the challenge, many of them don’t have passports.”
No country has yet to accept the Al Qaeda passport.
“Perhaps the best solution in Afghanistan is what has happened along the Canadian border. If they were able to make Pakistan into an advanced first world nation with a really high GDP there would be far less motivation to leave and consequently the number of people trying to cross the border would decrease. It has happened there and in a relatively short amount of time and there is no reason it could happen in Afghanistan,” continued Hander. “There needs to be the will to do that though and that is the real question, on both sides of the argument. If they can just push Pakistan forward a lot of these problems will be solved and terrorism will magically disappear throughout the region, at least most of it, and that’s a good thing.”
Napolitano was also in the country to discuss the controversial pat down techniques at Kabul airport.
