UNITED NATIONS RULING ALLOWS FOR THE ARBITRARY KILLING OF GAYS
November 21 2010
New York, NY – There have been many great accomplishments in the brief history of the United Nations but there are few who would argue that it has lived up the wildest dreams of its creators. Often mired in political discourse and aggressive stalemates,
the U.N. has often become a lightning rod for critics who view it as obstructionist to good will around the world. Nonetheless, the U.N. has persisted and provided a platform for nations both powerful and weak to become players on the world stage.
Despite major contributions around the world, contributions that are surely to continue, it has become ever clearer in recent years that the organization lacks influence in some profound ways. While they certainly do their best to interject into conflicts wherever they can, much of the domestic politics of nations is something the U.N. has been largely unable to manipulate, something quite fundamental to unifying the people of the planet. Though such actions have never been a mandate of the organization, there is little doubt that by evening out the basics of human rights much of the turmoil and conflict throughout the globe will simply abate. However now the organization has gone in the opposite direction and begun advocating the arbitrary killing of certain minorities, primarily gay people.
“To accept this amendment would be to accept that this particularly vulnerable group of people do not deserve specific mention, perhaps even to suggest that they do not warrant the same protection from killings. To us this suggestion is an affront to equality and respect for human dignity,” said Nicola Freedman, a representative for the British government. “This amendment could very well have made great strides towards the recognition of all peoples no matter their race, creed, religion, gender, or sexual orientation and given the world a base upon which all human rights can be managed. The defeat of this aspect of the bill puts us more or less where we were before and has done little to advance the cause of human rights throughout the world.”
The measure was an amendment to the ‘Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions’ bill, which was passed, but excluded protection based on sexual orientation. The amendment was opposed by representatives from the Middle East and Africa with Benin being the ringleader.
“Gay people have never had it as bad as other minorities, at least historically, but in today’s world it seems they are the only group receiving any kind of major prejudice throughout the world. The dislike for gay people around the world is nearly universal, quite twist really,” said Scrape TV Sexual Identity analyst Maria Kant. “In some poorer nations that dislike takes a lightly nasty form, as it does in other areas. It is clear that the world still has a lot of work to do if we want to see gay people being accepted in the same way as heterosexuals.”
30 out of 50 countries in Africa have outlawed homosexuality.
“Of course some of this may have nothing to do with gay people directly. Many of these

countries have enjoyed unlimited access to killing for generations and now this body is attempting to remove that privilege. It may very well be that above everything else, this is the people of these nations simply putting their collective foot down so that they can continue killing anyone they like,” continued Kant. “As countries become more and more tied to one another many will seek to lash out, to better identify themselves in the mass and that will mean fighting for the right to kill anyone they like. By removing that right forcibly, we may in fact do more damage than good. Though don’t tell gay people that, this is pretty bad news for them.”
Following the ruling, dozens of gay people were killed in an annual celebration in the Beninese capital of Porto-Novo.
