AFTER CONVICTION, 91-YEAR OLD NAZI SET FREE TO KILL AGAIN

Berlin, Germany – Eventually, sometime in the distant future, we will stop feeling the collective pain of the Holocaust. Eventually everyone involved will pass on and all we will have to remind us of that period is entries in history books. It may seem that we
will never forget the lessons or the trauma of the largest state-sponsored mass murder in history, but we will, just as we have done time and time again. History always marches on.
The Holocaust though will likely remain a potent entity for generations to come. The widespread devastation, and dissemination, of those events ensure that they will have a long lasting legacy and impact. Whatever the future may hold for the Holocaust, today it is still a viable event with many survivors, on both sides, still around to tell their stories and relive the trauma of that time, and for them the horror of those days is as vital now as it has ever been. That is most evident in the continued hunt for former Nazis who helped perpetrate the crimes that occurred in those years, the most recent of which has resulted in the successful conviction of John Demjanjuk. However, with the release of the 91-year old, convicted of 27,900 deaths, it may very well be that he will again stand trial for future crimes against humanity.
“This conviction is a very important victory for justice but I am very surprised by this decision to free Demjanjuk . This is a terrible decision. He was convicted of accessory to murder of nearly 30,000 people. He belongs in jail. That's where he belongs,” said Efraim Zuroff of the Simon Wiesenthal Center. “In no country in the world could a 
person be convicted of such heinous crimes and then be released shortly afterwards. This defeats the nature and value of criminal prosecution. This is a further offence to the people he killed, and a risk to society at large.”
Demjanjuk has been in failing health in recent years and spent most of the trial on a stretcher.
“I believe that the feeling was that this man, as horrendous as his crimes were, was no longer a threat to society and that society at large would not be served by imprisoning him. The attestation of doctors convinced the courts that Demjanjuk would likely not do well in prison and that any further punishment would not do anyone any good,” said a court insider. “There was a great deal of concern throughout the trial that he was embellishing his ailments and trying to evoke some kind of sympathy from the court. If that is true and he is actually much healthier than we have believed than it is entirely possible that he will remain a threat to society and that the judge will live to regret his decision to release this man, particularly if he starts to enact revenge against those who sought to imprison him.”
Adding to the concern is Demjanjuk’s political status. He lived for most of his life in the United States but was stripped of citizenship and is now nationless, allowed to run free throughout the world.
“I think it is very unlikely that he will return to his old ways. For one, the Sobibor camp is really just a tourist attraction now and so it would be difficult for him to return to exactly his old actions again, but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t cause problems,” said Scrape TV Mass Murder analyst Drake Webber. “There are many people who are threatened including the witnesses and the prosecution, even if they aren’t Jewish themselves. After all, this man was ripped from a life which he had built up for decades, was hunted mercilessly even after acquittal, and had everything he held dear destroyed. That’s bound to make anyone angry and just a little murdery.”
Demjanjuk’s lawyers have filed an appeal on the conviction. His whereabouts are not currently known.
