AL-QAEDA JOINS NATO COALITION IN FIGHT AGAINST GADDAFI

March 29 2011

Benghazi, Libya – Here in Libya things are going quite as well as planned. The tension is palpable amongst many of the rebel fighters in this, the centre of the rebel movement, after word came of a massive defeat at Sirte. For many the attack against libya protests
Gaddafi’s hometown was to be not just a strategic win but also an emotional victory, a clarion call that would energize the entire movement, and a definitive display of the power of the movement, and a very clear warning to Gaddafi and his regime that their days were numbered.

Now, in the face of an overwhelming defeat in that city, the let down amongst many of the fighters is quite evident, so invested as they were in that victory. Of course these have been emotional times and the ups and downs of the six week conflict has brought a great deal of fortitude to many of the fighters, leaving them more than capable of dealing with such a loss. Still, it is very clear that despite allied air strikes and emotional support, the rebels on the ground are dealing with some very real and practical concerns that are threatening to movement, namely a lack of arms and training, something the allied forces are unwilling to provide. Now though comes word that such an effort may not be needed after a new group joined the alliance in aiding the rebel movement with al-Qaeda providing fighters and weapons to the fight.sarkozy

“We expected to win at Sirte and this loss has taken many of us badly. This is not what we expected to happen and many of our people are down and there is much fighting between the soldiers. It is a bad time,” says one rebel commander who preferred not to be named. “We need help from other people. Our people have the passion and the will to fight onwards but we do not have the experience to fight against a proper army and it is this which is restricting us. We are welcome to any help.”

NATO commanders have noted ‘flickers’ of al-Qaeda amongst the rebel fighters, something many of the rebels appear to welcome.

“We appreciate the help from all our friends from around the world. Mr. Sarkozy, Mr. Obama, Mr. Bin Laden, these are our friends and they aid us in the battle against the tyrant Gaddafi. It is our only duty to remove him from power and we welcome any help we can get,” al qaeda training
said another leader, one of dozens in the Benghazi detachment. “One day they will recognize that the entire world is against them and that will be the day where we roll into Tripoli and take back the country for the people of Libya, not the leaders. We thank our friends in France and America and Britain and all the others for coming to help us rid our country of this man.”

Al-Qaeda officials have repeatedly offered support to the rebel forces.

“There is of course danger in any type of rebellion. The biggest concern has to be, of osama bin laden ayman al zawahiri
course, the instability of the nation and who will eventually come to lead the country after the government has been pushed out. That is why there is concern about the influence of al-Qaeda in actually aiding the rebellion because it’s possible they will want a spot in the government after things have settled down,” said Scrape TV International Conflict analyst Mario Martinez. “That said, at this stage any boots on the ground are a good thing. It’s become quite clear that the rebels are very disorganized and while they certainly have passion, they really do need a more seasoned voice to direct them. There are few organizations as seasoned as al-Qaeda and so in many ways it is a perfect fit, though the long term consequences may be problematic.”

No soldiers we spoke with were a part of the organization, though many claimed to know someone who knows someone who is a member.
