ALLIED FORCES MAKING THEMSELVES AT HOME LIBYA

March 27 2011

Benghazi, Libya – Over the past four decades there has been no country that has been more of a fly in the ointment to more countries than Libya. Certainly nations like Cuba, Iran, Tibet, North Korea, and Pakistan have provided major issues for some gaddafi crazy
countries, but Libya has stood alone in that they have pestered just about everyone. Across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and even at home in Africa Libya under Muammar Gaddafi has been the global equivalent of Dennis the Menace, annoying just about everyone.

There had to come a time when that was going to end, either with the removal of Gaddafi or by some other means. That time appears to be now after reports of major gains by rebel forces, aided by international air strikes. While the battle is still far from over there is little doubt that the face of Gaddafi’s Libya has changed dramatically and irrevocably, for good or ill. What will take the place of that old thorn in the side is of course an entirely different question and one that is likely weighing heavily on the minds of all the coalition forces and observers watching all around the world. For the short term though one thing is clear; the allies are not going anywhere, as evidenced by comments from U.S. officials and evidence that those forces are starting to make themselves a new home away from home on the Mediterranean.libya rebellion

“We're beginning to see, because of the good work of the coalition, his troops begin to turn back toward the west - and to see the opposition begin to reclaim the ground they had lost,” said U.S. officials. “We have taken out his armor, and the no-fly zone is fully in place and can be sustained with a lot less effort than it took to set it up. As for how long we will be here, I don't think anybody knows the answer to that.”

Rebel forces recently took back a number of towns they had lost prior to the coalition strikes.

“Any kind of military intervention in a sovereign nation is a challenge, not just from a mediterranean harbour
logistics standpoint but also from an appearance standpoint which is often just as important. Most western nations don’t want to appear as though they are war mongers, forcing their will on other nations. Such actions of course draw criticism but also protest from the electorate which is the most important fight they need to win,” said Scrape TV International Conflict analyst Mario Martinez. “That’s a part of the reason this conflict is so tricky. This isn’t Iraq or Afghanistan for all kinds of reasons. It doesn’t have the same type of opposition, challenging landscape, or embedded resistance. It’s a cakewalk as far as these things go which will make it a whole lot easier to sell to the public in these countries, especially if they decide to extend their stay.”

NATO has recently agreed to take control of the mission in the country, adding a number of new countries to the combatants.beach

“The real question of course is what is the end game? That is being asked across all the NATO countries but it’s becoming very clear that no one has a clear picture of what this will end up being, or if they do they aren’t telling,” continued Martinez. “A lot of these cities border the Mediterranean and would make for a great getaway for Europeans in particular. Throw up a couple of resorts and keep the locals in line and you’ve got a Hawaii for the EU. They appear to have already started to get cozy in a lot of these areas and it probably won’t be long until they are sipping margaritas and lazing on the beach. That may or may not have been the plan all along, but hey when in Rome.”

Coalition forces have reportedly been seen throughout Benghazi taking in local cuisine and night life.
