DELAY IN PRECHECKED BALLOTS CAUSES ELECTION CHAOS IN NIGERIA

April 3 2011

Abuja, Nigeria – Human beings have tried many different political systems throughout the thousands of years of civilization and not one of them has been perfect. Theocracies, monarchies, totalitarian states, and democracies have all vote
succeeded in some areas and failed in others. There may come a time, somewhere in the distant future, where we will develop a political system which will be amenable to all people, which will satisfy the concerns of every person living under it, but that time is not now.

For now the system most in vogue is of course democracy, an old but ever evolving system that has taken over many of the nations of the world. While the actual mechanics of democracy differ from nation to nation, even in the most sophisticated versions of the systems, the core principle of a representative government is steadily becoming a standard for all people. As we have seen in revolutions throughout eastern Europe in the 1990’s and in north Africa this year, the quest for representation is something that has taken over most of the world, likely laying a path for any future iterations of government. Nowhere is that more evident than in Africa, to root of ongoing social and political conflicts and of emerging nations. In one of that continents most nigeria elections
advanced nations, Nigeria, the change towards democracy is in high gear, or at least was until officials lost millions of ballots hours before the election. However, the country will proceed with elections, a little late perhaps, but with pre-checked ballots to speed up the process.

“In order to maintain the integrity of the elections and retain effective overall control of the process, the commission has taken the very difficult but necessary decision to postpone the national assembly elections to Monday,” said electoral head Attahiru Jega. “In order to save time and to reduce frustration at the polling booths many of these ballots which have been delayed will already be filled out leaving the voters with only the responsibility of showing up and dropping the ballot in the box.”

Interim President Goodluck Jonathan is considered the frontrunner in the election, confirmed by the printing company.

“The elections in Nigeria are really much more important than people think at first nigeria election
glance. Nigeria is an emerging nation, really a giant amongst dwarves in the region and because of that this election is a test for democracies all around the region. The entire world is watching this election not so much for the results but for the process, which unfortunately has hit some snags,” said Scrape TV African analyst Claude Contee. “There are many viable contenders for the Presidency but the PDP is the incumbent and is very popular so it’s likely that he will be re-elected, particularly if he was able to get his requests in before the deadline, and that this delay wasn’t the result of some Johnny-come-lately trying to sneak a few ballots under the door.”

“Getting ballots to the polling stations is of fundamental importance in any electoral process and Nigeria has obviously failed at doing even that. However I don’t think it will seriously undermine efforts to spread democracy throughout the region considering most people wait longer for medical supplies and water,” continued Contee. “It’s taking them little longer to get things right but the important thing is that they are getting things right. The true test of democracy is not gauged when it works perfectly, it is gauged when it faces challenges and still manages to triumph. We have seen these tests around the world and like those, Nigeria is actually exercising democracy in these challenges no matter the outcome, which we more or less already know.”

President Jonathan, as Vice-President, was reportedly critical in securing franchise contracts with Kinkos in 2008.
