GADDAFI FORCES CELEBRATE CEASEFIRE WITH ROCKET SHELLS

March 18 2011

Tripoli, Libya – After a month of almost incessant combat, Libyan government forces have declared a ceasefire across the country, marking the start of the end of the bloodshed which has so consumed the country. The announcement comes on the shooting guns into the air
heels of a robust United Nations resolution which allows for virtually unlimited action against the country in an effort to protect civilian lives, a possibility that Gaddafi forces have no doubt been hoping to avoid. At this stage it is not clear if any further action will be taken by UN forces.

The ceasefire marks the end of weeks of unremitting hostility by the Libyan military and other entities loyal to the Gaddafi leadership against rebel forces which took control of a number of key oil-producing cities in the western part of the country. That conflict has left thousands of people dead and brought widespread criticism and embargoes against the leadership, and has even brought an investigation by the International Criminal Court. Now though with a ceasefire in place it appears that much of that bloodshed will come to an end, something that has brought celebrations from all across the country, rebel and loyalist alike. One of the largest of those celebrations took place in the city of Misrata with live fire and shells being shot into the air in a traditional display of victory.gaddafi happy

“This is a great moment for the Libyan people and the entire country. We have been through this great test, this great trial, and now we come out of it as a stronger people and as a stronger nation. This is the time for all Libyans to join together in celebration for a greater Libya,” said a government spokesperson. “We have informed all our forces across the country of the ceasefire and they have joined in the celebrations alongside the common people. All Libyans are unified in this action and we all seek a greater peace and greater nation.”

The celebrations in Mistara resulted in at least 25 deaths, mostly party related.

“This is a sensitive moment to be sure, while there is certainly great hope that this will mark the end of violence in the country it is not something that can simply be taken on face value. That is just a simple reality because now the world’s attention is on the country, but when that changes, when the celebrations end, things could go badly again,” said Scrape TV African analyst Claude Contee. “I do have to say though that they should perhaps change their methods of celebration. I understand that 25 people being killed is not all that unusual in Libya, especially not recently, but those deaths could easily have been avoided by replacing gunfire with fireworks. They are a perfectly acceptable substitute for incendiary shells and aside from being far less deadly they also look very pretty.”beyonce

Libya has had a long standing ban on the private ownership of fireworks.

“This moment though, this is not the end of the Libyan crisis. Inevitably I think we will start seeing competing partygoers with both sides arguing as to which celebration is the best and that could cause tensions to flare up once again, no matter what the government says about a ceasefire,” continued Contee. “There is a lot of passion in the country and in the people right now and that is going to take a long time to abate unfortunately. While officially they aren’t supposed to be fighting I’d imagine we’ll see an extra death or two unrelated to the partying. Sometimes people just get a little out of control.”

Contrary to reports, the Gaddafi regime has apparently not issued celebratory grenades to their forces. Beyonce has reportedly already signed a deal to appear at the ceasefire celebrations.
