JAPAN EAGERLY AWAITING WORD FROM HOLLYWOOD CELEBRITIES FOLLOWING DISASTER
March 15 2011
Tokyo, Japan – As in all major tragedies, eventually words and expressions of trauma blur together and start to become meaningless. Faced with the incredible scale of sheer human tragedy, all stories and expressions of sympathy become almost the
same and as a result their impact is largely muted, if they ever had a real impact to begin with. Tragedy, after all, is the property of the people experiencing it not of outside observers who try in earnest to make others, and themselves, feel better about the event.
That phenomenon has very much been playing out across the world in the face of the massive earthquake and tsunami that has devastated Japan with virtually the entire world jumping to aid in the rescue and recovery operations. Even places that can barely afford to take care of themselves like the city of Kandahar have donated what little they can afford to the cause. In these moments borders tend to erode, ethnic, religious, and historical beefs are wiped away and the true kindness of the human spirit shines through. However, despite all the attention and affection being sent towards the people of Japan one notable group has stayed very conspicuously absent from the fray despite repeated pleas from the Japanese public. Hollywood is staying silent.
“This is the great tragedy of the Japanese people. This is the worst event many
people have ever experienced and God willing the worst they will ever experience. We are overjoyed at the help and affection from the entire world. We will never be able to repay the help that all of these nations have given to us and we thank them from the greatest depths of our hearts,” said a spokesperson for the Japanese government. “We do also understand that many nations are not in a position to give aid and to those nations we welcome your good thoughts and ask you not to burden your nation by making sacrifice. We even feel the same way for groups able to give aid but for whatever reason are unwilling. This is a time to be proud of the human race and not a time to draw divisions amongst people.”
More than 70 countries have offered or sent aid to Japan. Some of the nations excluded are the expected poor nations of Africa and South America, however breaking with tradition no popular celebrity has made any statement on the tragedy.
“This is a difficult time for the people of Japan but it is also a very awkward situation
for
many celebrities. Everyone knows that the people of Japan love America culture and the famous people here, but there is a serious conflict of interest for a lot of people,” said a Hollywood insider. “Part of it is the fact that there is a studio owned by a Japanese company, which has people both wanting to and not wanting to say something, but also the decreasing power of the Japanese market. I can tell you as well that more than a few studio heads were angered by the box office results this past weekend which undoubtedly were impacted by the earthquake coverage, and stars don’t want to experience that wrath.”
‘Battle: Los Angeles’, released by Sony pictures, was tops at the box office this weekend which suffered a large drop over last year.
“This is certainly an unusual event for all kinds of reasons. Sure, C-level stars have
gone on Twitter and expressed their sympathies but there has been no A-listers offering their help or even support. When the Haiti quake hit John Travolta was on a plane, Sean Penn in a boat but nothing like that here , not even George Clooney and I think we would all fell a whole lot better if he in particular said something,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “No one would expect celebrities to go over there and fight radioactive meltdowns or drag bodies off the beach, but at least some prominent expression of sympathy. I’m sure the people of Japan would appreciate that and it would help give them the strength to go on through these difficult times.”
Rumours that Angelina Jolie had landed in the country to help in rescue operations sent off waves of excitement across the country.
