NATO STRIKES DELIVER BLOW TO REBEL STRONGHOLD NEAR BREGA

April 7 2011

Brega, Libya – War is never clean, never neat, and rarely goes the way even the most pragmatic of planners expect. Part of that is of course the volatility of conflict itself, on the ground, where things like bravery, training, and pure chance come into vietnam war protest
play but there are always other factors. Shifts in attitudes, political pressures, and other external forces can impact the turn of conflict in ways that military planners simply cannot predict, sending the best laid plans into disarray and changing the outcome of the war.

There is perhaps no clearer example of such a shift than the U.S. war in Vietnam. With dramatically more advanced military capabilities and money, defeating the guerrilla fighters of the Vietcong should have been easy. The war dragged though and eventually resulted in The United States retreating and communist forces taking over the country. A combination of fighting spirit on one side, and lack of the same on the other eroded the plans of the military hierarchy. Thus are the twists and turns of war, something NATO commanders are currently experiencing in Libya. With major losses by rebel forces and growing discomfort with the nature of the battle at home, the once clear path to victory in that country has become muddied, and now become totally obscured in the wake of another major attack by NATO on rebel forces, attacks that will no doubt give embolden Gaddafi forces.linya rebel tank destruction

“We were standing by our tanks and NATO fired two rockets at us. NATO are liars. They are siding with Gaddafi. These are not the actions of partners but of aggressors and we must end their tyranny,” said one rebel fighter who narrowly avoided the shelling. “We have lost much territory in recent weeks and these actions are not helping us to better our situation. We welcomed the NATO forces because they pledged to help us but now they are working with the government. These are not battles we can win.”

The strike in Brega, which killed five fighters, is the second in as many days. An earlier strike in Ajdabiya killed thirteen soldiers.

“The nature of any type of strike in this region, particularly with shifting borders and libya air strike
consistent movement by militant forces, has made the dynamics of conflict very precarious and this has resulted in intermittent failures in designated actions,” said a NATO spokesperson. “Unfortunately despite our advanced technology and the skill and expertise of our pilots mistakes do still occur but we are working to keep those at a minimum. These are the vagaries of any type of conflict but we are mindful of such events and try our best to only target those individuals which we seek to diminish. I can’t speak to any specifics in terms of operational details but will say that the vast majority of our strikes have been exactly on target and been very successful.”

The cities of Brega and Ajdabiya are both considered key oil ports and have been controlled by rebel forces since nearly the start of the conflict.

“I don’t think that anyone can look at these strikes and see them as anything but a gaddafi smiling
success. I think it’s a little early to say that NATO has decided to side with Gaddafi and the government forces, but they do need to practical and understand that this conflict is more complex than good guys versus bad guys,” said Scrape TV International Conflict analyst Mario Martinez. “You need to show both sides that you are willing to work with them and NATO has gone a long way towards alienating the Gaddafi government, which more and more looks like it is going to have victory. It only makes sense in that scenario to make up a little ground. This will help Gaddafi gain territory and ensure a resolution to the conflict in relatively short order.”

NATO denied providing  Gaddafi forces with arms to replace the ones they destroyed earlier.
