SCHOOLCHILDREN GETTING FRONTLINE EDUCATION IN LIBYA
June 4 2011
Tripoli, Libya – The real dividing line between nations is not, and never has been, issues such politics, economics, religion, or race, at least not directly. The true dividing between successful nations and cultures, and those with which the struggle starts
very early on in a population’s life, is education. Time has proven over and over again that the better educated a population, the better off the nation as a whole will become. Reading, arithmetic, and other basic skills are always keys for building the groundwork of a nation, upon which all other achievements can be built.
The reason for that is a relatively simple one; Education allows for better communication and the development of new tools, which in turn allows for prosperity. Societies are built on one success leading into another success, and through that process become more prominent. In contrast, societies that struggle with education often flounder. Potential innovation is stifled and class systems develop, preventing communication and other essential components of a fluid society. Leaders know this of course which is why education is so often given such value in some countries, and is so restricted in others. However there aren’t always simple explanations as to why education systems fail in certain countries, as made evident by countries such as Libya which despite a civil war and international conflict is still trying very hard to ensure its children get frontline educations even in the midst of their fight.
“These are great challenges for the nation and people of Libya but they are challenges that we face with a glad and strong heart. Our nation has been through many struggles in the past and we will face many in the future but these events do not
discourage us, rather they embolden us to act aggressively for the future of our nation,” said a spokesperson for the Libyan government. “We want to ensure that all our children get the best education, that they are out there in the front leading the way, that they are our first priority. We feel there is no better education than the one our children are getting today. They are all at the front of the class.”
Aside from basic classes such as math and science, many are also learning rifle assembly and disabling ordinance in classes in Misrata.
“We want to engage children of all ages, to know that our future is safe in their hands. We have boys and girls of all ages very much on the front lines of education, learning the essentials of the real world,” continued the spokesperson. “Our children’s educations are now and always will be our first priority. We want to ensure that the children of Libya are always at the forefront of the education battle, that their learning is the priority of the government and of the people of the country. We will not hesitate in this frontline education even in the midst of this strife.”
The most aggressive frontline education officially begins at 15 years old, though younger students have been accepted.
“It’s a funny thing to think but of the nations in Africa Libya has actually been one of the leaders in terms of education. They have one of the highest literacy rates on the continent and have made things like laptops for students a priority. Even before this war, education was very much on the minds of the Libyan government,” said Scrape TV Education analyst Ken Ridley. “It’s good to see that even in this crisis they haven’t lost their focus on the future. That is the one truism with education around the world. Once people start to get smart, they realize how valuable being smart is and want to keep it going. Hopefully for the children of Libya this frontline education remains a priority.”
Libyan forces have reportedly been moving students towards the rebel stronghold of Benghazi in recent day, likely planning a major literacy campaign.
