WYCLEF JEAN SHOT BY ERRANT PIECE OF GLASS IN HAITI

March 21 2011

Port-au-Prince, Haiti – Politics in any country is never a safe game. Backbiting, back stabbing, and skeletons in the closet are all standards in any political race, and things only get worse for the person who wins. More than a few people have been undone, john edwards
not just politically, by getting involved in high stakes politics. However, no matter how many warning stories appear, the dangerous game of politics goes on and draws new victims on a regular basis.

It stands to reason that with the game being so tough that in tough countries it is even more rugged, even more dangerous. Unlike the harsh words and exposes that tend to dominate politics in advanced nations, in developing and third world countries politics can be a much more dangerous game, as evidenced by the ongoing political chaos in Haiti. Now more than a year removed from the devastating earthquake that crippled the country, the nation is still embroiled in a complex Presidential race that will help to decide the future direction of the troubled nation. Adding to the complexity is the presence of former leaders Jean-Claude ‘Baby Doc’ Duvalier and Jean Bertrand Aristide as well as music mogul Wyclef Jean. While most would expect the former two to have the bulk of the trouble in the politics of the country, it is Jean who appears to have experienced the brunt of the trouble after being shot by a broken piece of glass on the weekend.wyclef jean haiti

“Wyclef was indeed injured on the weekend while in Haiti as an observer for the electoral process. He had been attending a rally for one of the candidates when a series of gunshots rang out. Wyclef was struck in the hand,” said a spokesperson for the musician. “The injury was not serious and he was released shortly after visiting the hospital. He made it clear on his trip to the hospital and while being treated that he wanted to be out as soon as possible to continue to oversee to election. He does this for the Haitian people.”

Contradicting early reports, doctors stated that Jean had been in fact been cut by glass, likely from a broken window.

“One can certainly understand the emotion of Haiti, of wanting to get involved, and broken window
unfortunately Jean has not been able to be as involved as he would have liked after being rejected for candidacy. In spite of that however he has stayed in the country and continued to stay abreast of happenings there, and for his trouble this happens,” said Scrape TV Music analyst Dylan Chambers. “The fact that he got up out of the hospital and was right back on the campaign trail only hours after being injured in this grievous manner speaks to his passion for Haiti and for the Haitian people. That type of commitment to human rights and to democracy is exceedingly rare, especially amongst the very wealthy.”

Jean’s right hand was injured in the incident. He is right-handed.wyclef jean

“It almost doesn’t matter if Jean narrowly avoided an assassin’s bullet or simply scraped his hand on a broken bottle, what matters is that within hours he was back out there beating the streets and fighting for the rights of the Haitian people,” continued Chambers. “That should serve as an inspiration for all the people of Haiti who have suffered so much. If Jean can be back out there on the election trail after injuring his dominant hand then surely the people of Haiti can recover from the earthquake. No excuses, no blame, just do it. That is the real lesson to be learned here and thanks to Jean all the people of Haiti have experienced it firsthand.”

Elsewhere in Haiti Sean Penn injured his calf while hauling sacks of rice. A bandaid was applied and he missed no time.
