Jerusalem, Israel - As Israeli forces rumbled across the border into Gaza, marking the beginning of the second stage of their assault against Hamas targets, world leaders have begun to weigh in with their official responses. From support for Israel, to support for Hamas, to calls for peace, the global community has reacted with the expected responses, showing an increasing level of boredom for the ongoing troubles in the region.
The ground invasion follows the air strikes that have so far killed over 400 people in the region since last week. The aggression by the Israeli forces comes at the end of a six month ceasefire which had spawned a series of rocket attacks by Hamas militants into Israeli cities. The world, having been here many times before, expected little else.
“It’s great for the news agencies because they know that inevitably they will have a story, but for world leaders and conflict followers alike, the continuing aggression by both sides is getting a little tired. I mean Arabs versus Israelis, how much a cliché can you get nowadays. It makes it difficult for anyone to take it seriously anymore,” said Scrape TV Middle East analyst David Gershwin. “I mean how many times we can go through this? It’s not like anything is going to be resolved. The Israelis will only go so far, then pull back, Hamas will rearm and we will be doing this all over again in a year. Patience only goes so far.”
Conflicts in the region have been an annual event since at least 2004. The latest in January and February of 2008 spawned the now defunct ceasefire which some critics see as criminally short.
“The ceasefire was short, but lasted just long enough for both sides to re-arm and rile people up again. It does look like they are seeking a more stable schedule for war which is good, though I do question their timing. It is Football playoff season after all,” continued Gershwin. “Not to devalue to loss of human life and the chaos that war creates, but the reality is these flare-ups are really only to get attention from the rest of the world and the United States in particular, but with college bowls and NFL playoffs going on, the last thing most Americans are worried about is the middle east. Fantasy football doesn’t win itself.”
Israel has the world’s fifth largest military and receives the bulk of its foreign aid from the United States. Hamas receives the majority of its funding from Israel and US arch enemy Iran. It is widely speculated that the regularity of the conflicts is related to year end budgeting.
“It’s a basic tenet of any business to spend all the money that is given to you so that you can secure financing for the following year,” said Scrape TV business analyst Ken Green. “And while that is no doubt a factor in this conflict, Israel may also be trying to impress upon Barack Obama that they will indeed use all the money that is given to them in hopes that he will continue to finance their operations. But of course with Obama being a big football fan I doubt he’s got CNN on at the moment.”
Obama was raised in Chicago and despite his hometown Bears not being in the playoffs, it is thought that the President-Elect is tucked in to watch the games for the weekend. As for the current President, it is though that he is spending the weekend doing some early packing ahead of his impending move.
“And then you have the rest of the world. The powers who can actually make a difference seem to not care, and the rest, well does anyone really care what Denmark or Lesotho have to say about world affairs?,” continued Gershwin. “I think you’d be hard pressed to find even Palestinians or Israelis who can get themselves too worked about the fighting, unless they’re getting shot or bombed that is. Even there you’d probably find limited support.”
