Redmond, WA – Microsoft has made the first official announcement regarding the successor to the Xbox 360. The infamous red ring of death, a term which the company refuses to use, will not be an issue for the next generation of system when it is eventually released.
The RROD, named so for the light display on the front of the machine, has been a major Achilles heel for the Xbox 360 system. The three lights generally indicate that the machine has suffered a catastrophic system failure and requires repair. With defective rates some reports peg at thirty percent, the Redmond based software giant took a massive $1 billion dollar hit earlier this year to remedy the situation for future machines, and repair existing consoles. Understandably, the company is not eager to repeat the exercise for the next generation of machines.
The plan is to introduce a whole interface for the machine that will not include any type of red light. Instead the company will change the display to a more soothing blue colour. The new machine will not, unlike the current system, allow the light system to indicate to players the status of the machine in any way.
“One thing we learned with the 360 was that self diagnosis is the worst thing that can happen,” said Robbie Bach, president of the Xbox division. “We should have learned that from Doctors. Next time around we won’t make the same mistake. If a machine fails, it fails. We don’t want customers knowing what’s going on. That was our biggest error with the 360. The diagnostic system gained this huge mindshare and became a hammer to hit us with. Next time, no one is going to know what is going on. Count on it.”
The company declined to discuss any other details as to what might or might not be in the next iteration of the Xbox line, but decided in the wake of recent announcements from Sony and Nintendo that next gen technology was being developed that they needed to make a bit of a splash.
“I think people will be very happy with what we have planned for the next generation,” continued Bach. “We really are going to focus on the aesthetics of the machine and not so much on the raw hardware. We realize fully now how important appearances can be, no matter what the truth of the situation might be. We want to give consumers the most satisfying experience we possibly can, we are fully committed to it in fact. The blue light is just one example of how we are putting our customers first.”
Best bets are that the next iteration of the Xbox line will be available in late 2011.
