Kyoto, Japan – With their lacklustre showing at E3 it would have been safe to assume that Nintendo might be running out of ideas. They seem to have played a lot of their cards already, with particular attention on the Wii, one might think that the ever inventive house that Mario built might be running a little dry these days.
Not according to Shigeru Miyamoto at least, who post-E3 stated that the annual festival is no longer for hardcore gamers and that the big N would show their products as they saw fit, waiting until they are ready rather than getting them ready for the show.
It appears now that Nintendo indeed hasn’t run out of ideas.
The company has been playing with colour schemes since the N64 and Gameboy color days, and have continued that practice throughout the life of the DS. Both the original fat system and the DS Lite have seen multiple colour variations through their record breaking runs; blue, red, gold, and specially targeted pink. Now, the company is throwing all those colour schemes into one and bringing the “cascade” theme to Japanese and European store shelves.
The new theme will feature stripes of six different colors; violet, blue, green, yellow, orange, red wrapping around the exterior and interior face of the machine. The intent is to appeal to as many gamers as possible by including as many colours as possible.
“From feedback that we have received our customers prefer a variety of options,” said the company in a statement. “While it is not viable to release every colour under the rainbow into our product stream, we do want to satisfy as many of our customers as possible and we feel this provides the best of every world. We are very excited about this new colour theme and we are sure that consumers will be as well.”
The company did not announce whether or not the new theme will be a limited edition or be a permanent addition to the DS family. They made no reference to the overtones that the rainbow design brings to light.
“It does look a bit like the Pride flag. It’s a very odd choice if you ask me,” said IGN editor Matt Casamassina. “I mean not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it seems odd to have a mass market product with those kind of overtones does seem a little odd. It could be that they are oblivious to the connection, though that’s unlikely. It may be that this is a segment of the market that has been untapped as yet. Nintendo has been very good about exploring those alternative segments of the population, and this may just be an extension of that philosophy.”
Is Nintendo trying for a new market share? Will they succeed? We will see when the system is released in December.
