IRA USING VIDEO GAMES TO FIGHT ENGLISH OPPRESSION
September 28 2011
Belfast, Northern Ireland – Things have certainly calmed down in Ireland over the last decade or so, but tension still exists. The agreements that ended the fighting in that country have done little to erase the long legacy of hate and mistrust that has built over multiple generations and that, in turn, means that the situation in that country may never fully resolve itself.
To wit, a new technique now being employed by the IRA to put fear into the English people and hopefully push their agenda forward, video games.
As detailed by British broadcaster ITV, the IRA has begun using scenarios depicted in video games and played them off as real events, events that show the formidable firepower and determination of the organization, a sure sign of a resurgence of the troubles that have so afflicted the region for so many years.
“The events featured in ‘Exposure: Gadaffi and The IRA’ were genuine but it would appear that during the editing process the correct clip of the 1988 incident was not selected,” ITV said in statement. “Other footage was mistakenly used in the film by producers. This was an unfortunate case of human error for which we apologize.”
That mistaken footage was apparently delivered to the station by IRA agents. The organization has apparently been training game players for the last few years.
The footage was a part of the game Arma II and supposedly depicted the downing of a British helicopter by IRA forces in 1988.
“Video games have become big business in recent years and now we are seeing that they are more than just dollars, that they have a real life impact on the world. Now video games have the ability to not only alter history but also impact the geopolitical status of the planet, a potentially disturbing trend,” said Scrape TV Gaming analyst Graeme Hawthorne. “People have long talked about video games creating real world violence but until now that has only been talk. Something like this could very well spark a new conflict in the region and give rise to real-world violence in the region once again.”
The British government has long restricted the sale of violent video games in Northern Ireland, efforts which have been stepped up because of recent efforts by the IRA.
“This could very well just be the beginning of a new onslaught by the IRA and the video gaming community that could shift the politics not just of the region, but of the globe. All it takes is one well-played game broadcast in the right place to tip nations towards war. This is the real threat people have been worried about in respect to video games all this time,” continued Hawthorne. “It has never been the isolated loner shooting up his school or beating up his family, it has been the ability of video games to alter global dynamics. This is first incident of this type but I can almost guarantee it won’t be the last.”
Boehmia Interactive Studio, the company behind the title used in this case, has reportedly donated thousands to Irish charities in the past.
