JOHN CARPENTER BELIEVES HIS FUTURE IS IN PLAYING VIDEO GAMES
October 19 2011
Los Angeles, CA – There was a time when John Carpenter was the most recognizable horror movie directors on the planet. In fact, he was one of the most recognizable directors in any genre, for a time. Hits like ‘Halloween’ and ‘Escape From New York’ penetrated the public’s consciousness, and impact felt even today as evidenced by the recent remake of his cult classic ‘The Thing’.
There is no debate that Carpenter’s legend is intact. Fans of the genre and even sensible critics outside his main fan base have made his legend, something which will likely only deepen as time goes on. The man himself, though, has been largely absent from the movie-making scene for a number of years. While he did come back this year with the release of ‘The Ward’, those few people who have actually seen the film have stated that it is a far cry from the master’s peak, something which could be said for his output for the last twenty years.
Carpenter, though, hasn’t been standing still even if he hasn’t been high profile and in fact has dedicated most of his time to playing video games, a practice he believes really does hold much of his future passion.
“I was so impressed with the first F.E.A.R. that I did some publicity for that game. When I was asked to participate in the third one, it was an easy choice,” Carpenter told Gamepro.
The director actually directed a number of sequences for that upcoming title, but the bulk of his participation has been sitting on the couch with corn chips playing the early build, and other titles. Carpenter apparently also likes the ‘Dead Space’ and ‘BioShock’ titles, while sitting on his couch.
“There is little debate that movies and games have really blended their audiences over the last few years. Games are becoming more cinematic and movies are becoming more interactive. They are really feeding off each other at a creative level. It’s an interesting time for fans of both products,” said Scrape TV Gaming analyst Graeme Hawthorne. “It’s really a tribute to how far video games have come in the last few years, that prominent people like Carpenter want to get involved, that they aren’t just doing it to promote a movie tie-in but actually wanting to participate, even if they are just doing it to get free copies of the game.”
It’s not clear if Carpenter will get a full copy of the new F.E.A.R. title but it’s believed unlikely that he would be able to play otherwise. ‘The Ward’ has apparently been a major money loser.
“This would really have been something special if they had the John Carpenter from the 1980’s. That would be a really special collaboration. Now, well it’s nice and it’s great that they are giving him copies of the games. I mean he is a legend and that has to have benefits,” continued Hawthorne. “Hopefully they will be able to maintain the quality and energy of the previous titles with Carpenter involved. I understand that they may be dazzled by the legend, but they can’t get too wrapped up in that. You have to know when it’s better to just sit someone on a couch and have them test rather than direct, even when that person is John Carpenter.”
The first half of the new F.E.A.R. game is apparently much better than the second half.
